Hoosick Grange met on October 22, with Master David Cornell. It was Halloween Party night and Bring Can Goods For The Food Closet night. Some of the Grangers were in costume. After the business meeting, the Master had the Lecturer do the program. The Lecturer told us the theme of the meeting was “What Is October?” It’s all the things that make up the month. She read a monologue from the movie Thriller, that Vincent Race read, and then read a poem titled “Little Halloween.”
The Lecturer asked the Grangers if Christopher Columbus ever brought women over? After many answers, she told them on the third trip he did (30 women). She told about the different varieties of apples and when they are ready. Then she asked if they knew why the tree turns color in the Fall. Many gave different answers, and they were right. She talked about Fire Prevention Month and asked the ladies what would they do in case of a grease fire on the stove in a frying pan. There were many different right answers, and one of the best was – put a cover over the pan. The Lecturer told about flu season and said one of the best suggestions was to wash your hands, again and again. The Lecturer had passed around quiz sheets at the beginning of the program. Elsie Marpe was the winner.
They had a story about an outhouse prank and a reading on Halloween trivia. She told a story about a husband who used the brush hog too early on his wife’s gourd field. Boy, was he sorry. The Lecturer told how Congress approved daylight saving time in 1918 and reminded everyone that it ends on November 2, Sunday. Her closing thought was, “He or She who hoots with the owls at night cannot soar with the eagles in the morning.”
On November 5, Pomona Grange will be held at the Center Brunswick Grange. A covered dish supper will be at 7 pm. Hoosick Grange will meet on November 12. It will be Veterans Night. There is a change in the speaker. It’s also Pie Night, and don’t forget to bring your Christmas Shoebox for children in our community.
