BCS Bond Vote The Same As It Ever Was

At about halfway into last Wednesday’s Berlin School District Board meeting, Board member Frank Zwack took his glasses off and buried his head into his arms at the table where his fellow Board members were once again arguing over the Bond authorization for the Capital Project. The meeting went on. Nobody seemed to find his actions all that unusual. For the sixth time the Board had failed to obtain the required super-majority fifth vote to get the $6.8 million Capital Project underway at the elementary school. Berlin Middle/High School Is County Envirothon Champ

The Berlin High School Envirothon Team was named the Rensselaer County Capital Region winners on May 10. On Thursday, May 10th, the Berlin High School and Middle School Envirothon teams traveled to Schoharie Valley to the Blenheim Gilboa Center to compete in their first Envirothon competition – the 2012 Capital Region Envirothon. They finished in first place, outcompeting reigning champions Tech Valley High School. The students performed remarkably well given they only had several weeks to prepare. BCS Agriculture Club Heirloom Plant Sale

The Berlin Middle/Senior High School Agriculture Club is sponsoring an Heirloom Plant sale. Goodermote And Fiske Elected To BCS Board

Voters in the Berlin Central School District Tuesday re-elected School Board President Gina Goodermote, and voted out Board Member Rachel Finney of Stephentown, replacing her with Katie Fiske of Petersburgh. The budget and two resolutions all passed easily.

Profiles Of The Candidates For The BCS BOE

BCS Elementary School Properties Appraised At Zero

The market value of the Stephentown and Grafton Elementary Schools has been determined to be zero. At a sparsely attended public hearing Tuesday evening on the 2012-13 Berlin School District budget and the upcoming May 15 voting, Business Manager William Burke noted that the property appraisal reports had been received from the Bauer Appraisal Group of Albany and posted on the District’s website at Berlincentral.org.

Petersburgh Fire Department Cindy Harrison Memorial Scholarship

Applications are now being accepted for the Petersburgh Fire Department Cindy Harrison Scholarship from those continuing their education through either college or vocational training. Current or former Berlin graduates who have overcome obstacles and/or struggled through adversity are eligible.

BCS Bond: Déjà Vu All Over Again

Bond authorization for the Capital Project approved by Berlin School District voters in December came up once again at the School Board meeting on Tuesday and once again failed to get the required super-majority fifth vote. Board Members Gina Goodermote, Frank Zwack, Rachel Finney and James Willis voted in favor of proceeding with authorizing the bond, but Beverly Stewart and John Nash could not be moved. Board Member Alan Webster Jr. was absent.

BCS Adopts Budget With A 1.98% Tax Levy Increase

The Berlin School Board adopted a $17,438,900 budget for 2012-2013 at the workshop meeting Tuesday, and it will now go to the residents for their approval. The Capital Project bond authorization, however, though already approved by the residents, was once again blocked for the fourth time by three Board members who remain adamant in their opposition.
