It was a tale of two halves in Berlin on Tuesday night where the boy’s basketball team was hosting Central Hudson Valley League foe Waterford. After a 22 point victory in their first meeting of the year, the Fordians may not have gotten what they expected from the opening tip-off.
The Mountaineers jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first two minutes and more importantly seemed to grab every rebound. Waterford seemed shocked when Berlin was scoring on second chances and grabbing defensive rebounds and scoring on their trips down the floor. The Mountaineers led 16-10 after the first quarter.

Berlin Central School District 2013-2014 Kindergarten Registration
The Berlin Central School District has begun the process of registering kindergarten students for the 2013-2014 school year. If you have a child who will be five years of age on or before December 1, 2013, please call 658-2127 from February 4 through February 15 and from February 25 through March 1, 2013, between the hours of 9 am and 3 pm to make sure your child is listed on our kindergarten register. The office will be closed from February 18 through February 22, 2013 for Winter Recess. This will ensure that you will receive the kindergarten registration packet by mail.
All registration paperwork including a copy of your child’s Birth or Baptismal Certificate and proof of residency must be hand delivered to Berlin Elementary School by March 29, 2013. Drop off times are between 8:30am and 3:45 pm Monday through Friday.

Berlin Students In The Green Mountain Youth Orchestra

The Green Mountain Youth Orchestra combined with The Lakes Region Youth Orchestra to present a ” Night At The Movies” concert under the direction of Ellen Sager. Five students from Berlin auditioned and were selected for the GMYO for the 2012-2013 season. Once a year the two youth orchestras combine and present a series of concerts throughout the day for area school children from the three surrounding states. The orchestras finished the day with an evening performance for the public.

BCS Board Hears Budget Woes

The year 2013 has only just begun and already the Berlin Central School District is working on how it will pay for 2014 and beyond. With future State and Federal aid in doubt, and a large increase in Teacher’s retirement benefits expected, the financial future is uncertain. At Tuesday’s School Board meeting, held at the Stephentown Fire Hall, BCS Business Manager William Burke outlined a five year forecast which, with all things remaining as they are now, he described as “dire.”

The Berlin boys volleyball team got off to a fast start with two wins over New Lebanon. Then the team suffered two tough losses, one to Voorhesville and one to Germantown to go to a 2-2 league record.

Maggie Gordon led the way against Doane Stuart last Friday with 16 points, followed by Maria Gordon with 9, Sarah Bentley with 6, Jordan Cahill with 5 and Brittany Gilbert with 4. First Pizza Night Of The New Year
On Friday, January 18, the Berlin High School Spanish Club will be hosting a Pizza Night fundraiser at the high school from 4 to 7 pm. You can order hot fresh red or white pizzas starting at $8 each plus toppings for $1 each. Toppings include pepperoni, sausage, ham, mushrooms, onions, black olives, green peppers, broccoli, pineapple and jalapenos. After Sandy Hook BCS To Evaluate Security

In the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, the Berlin Central School District School Board, at the monthly meeting Tuesday, passed a resolution to completely evaluate the District’s security policies. The resolution passed with all in attendance in favor; Board Member Bev Stewart was absent that night.
