Berlin Central School District Requests for Transportation to Non-Public Schools Due On or Before April 1, 2015

All requests for transportation to Private or Parochial schools must be submitted to the Board of Education by April 1.  State law requires that requests for transportation must be made by April 1 of each year for both new and returning students.  If a child’s placement or acceptance at a particular school has not been finalized, return a completed request form in anticipation of attendance.  New residents must submit a written request immediately after establishing residence in the district.

Request forms are available on line at www.berlincentral.org, click on Parents then Forms.  You may also contact the District Office at 658-2690.

Invitation To Grafton High School Seniors

Grafton high school seniors are invited to apply for the Ethel Simmons Memorial Award. The prize of $300 will be awarded to the student who submits the best essay on some aspect of Grafton history.   The application and guidelines are available at the guidance offices of both Berlin Central High School and Tamarac High School as well as at the Grafton Community Library and Grafton Town Hall.

Any Grafton student who is attending public, or private school or who is home schooled is eligible to apply.

Applications must be submitted at the Grafton Community Library no later than 1 pm on Saturday, April 18.

The award is co-sponsored by the Graton Community Library and the Grafton Historical Society. For additional information or resource topics please call  235-8317 or e mail  GHS12082@aol.com.

Fundraising Activities For Berlin Students’ Trip To Spain In April

February Pizza Night at Berlin HS

On Friday, February 27 from 4 to 7 pm, students, parents, and teachers will be working together at the Berlin MS/HS to make and sell hot fresh pizzas to help students raise money for their trip to Spain in April. You can order online by e-mailing Karen Day (kday@berlincentral.org) before 2 pm on Friday the 27th or by telephone after 3 pm at 658-2515 ext 1042. Red or white pizzas start at $8 and toppings are $1 each. Toppings include: pepperoni, sausage, ham, bacon, meatball, mushrooms, peppers, black olives, onions, jalapeños, pineapple, and broccoli. Starting this month we will have a specialty pie for $10 – this month’s pie is Buffalo Chicken.

Berlin And Schoharie Spain Trip Bowling Tournament

Saturday, February 28 from 10 am to 1 pm at the Green Island Lanes, students and staff from both Berlin HS and Schoharie HS will be hosting a Bowling Tournament to help students raise funds towards their trip to Spain in April through Education First Student Travel (EF Tours). Students from both schools have been traveling together for several years now in an effort to increase students’ global awareness. Now they are working together to support their families in cutting the cost of the trip. Cost per person for bowling is $25 and includes two games, rentals, and lunch. Trophies will be awarded for Highest Individual Score and Highest Team Score. There will also be a coffee can auction with lots of items from gift cards to gift baskets to tools and more. Berlin-New Lebanon Wrestling Strong At Salem Tournament

Berlin-New Lebanon Wrestling went to the Section II Class D Tournament at Salem Central School on Saturday February 7.

Calvin Mars took 4th place in the 126 weight class and will be representing Berlin at the Sectionals on February 14.

Berlin Central School District Announces 2015-2016 Pre-K And Kindergarten Registration

The Berlin Central School District has begun the process of registering students for the 2015-2016 Pre-K and Kindergarten classes. Students must be legal residents of the school district and reside with parents or guardian within the school district at the time of registration.

2015-2016 Pre-K Registration – Students who will be four years old on or before December 1, 2015, are eligible to register. Please call Candy Sweener at 658-2127 ext. 200 to place your child’s name on our registration list. You will receive a registration packet by mail that must be completed and returned to the Main Office at Berlin Elementary School by April 1, 2015.  Pre-K screening will take place in the spring, and you will be contacted to schedule an appointment.

2015-2016 Kindergarten Registration – Students who will be five years old on or before December 1, 2015, are eligible to register. Please call Patty Nash at 658-2515 ext. 1070 to place your child’s name on our registration list. You will receive a registration packet by mail that must be completed and returned to the Central Registrar located at Berlin MS/HS by April 1, 2015.  Kindergarten screening will take place in the spring, and you will be contacted to schedule an appointment. If your child is currently attending the Berlin Pre-K program, their name will automatically be placed on our registration list.

Elmer A. Grogan Scholarship

Applications are being accepted for the scholarship award of $250 for the best essay on “What Freedom Means To Me” by a graduating senior from Brunswick Central School District or Berlin Central School District who is continuing on with his or her education.  The essay should not be less than 250 words or not more than 500 words.  The scholarship is being given by the Carner, Etman, Smith V.F.W. Post 6340 in memory of a former member Elmer A. Grogan.

The deadline for applications is May 4.  Applications are available at the guidance counselor offices of both high schools and should be mailed to:

Berlin Central School Teachers Take The Polar Plunge

Natasha The Robot Teaches Programming To Berlin Central School Students

On Wednesday, January 21, Berlin Middle School/High School students in Mrs. Wetmore’s technology classes received a lesson from an unusual teacher.

Natasha, the 23 inch tall NAO humanoid robot, and her human partner Hillary Dee from Northeastern Regional Information Network (NERIC), showed students the future in computer programming and robotics.

Berlin’s Kyle Burdick Is BCS December Scholar Athlete

BCS Senior Kyle Burdick has played soccer since he was four years old. His experience and commitment was evident this year as the team was undefeated during the regular season becoming CHVL league champions. The team also reached the third round of sectionals, only losing to Lake George – their toughest competitor.
