TVCG Meeting

The January meeting of the Taconic Valley Community Group (TVCG), is scheduled for Thursday, January 13, at 12:30 pm at the Immaculate Conception Church Hall, Route 20, New Lebanon. The program will feature Jim Shake of the American Red Cross discussing the blood drive that TVCG will host on Thursday, February 10, at the Immaculate Conception Church Hall. Brainard Church Burns

Fire of undetermined origin pretty much destroyed the old United Methodist Church in Brainard early Wednesday morning. Mary Morris, who lives across Route 20 from the Church, said she heard her dog barking sometime around midnight and wondered why. Later she heard more commotion outside and when she went out to see what was going on she was horrified to see flames shooting out the side windows of the Church. Brunswick Golf Season Pass Raffle

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Brunswick Lodge of Elks is sponsoring a raffle for a 2011 Golf Season Pass at the Brunswick Greens Golf Course on Hoosick Road in Troy. Tickets costs $5, and only 100 will be sold. They are on sale now!
This fund-raiser will help support the Ladies’ major functions including Cerebral Palsy, Clothe a Child and a host of other charities.
Call Debbey at 813-5964 to reserve your tickets. The drawing will be in March.
The pass is not applicable to league or tournament play.

Rensselaer County Legislature – Layoffs Put Jimino And Unions At Loggerheads

There was plenty of media at the Rensselaer County Legislature’s regular meeting on Tuesday evening. Television cameras and reporters from all the Albany networks as well as photographers and reporters from area print media crowded onto the floor of the Chamber, and the gallery was packed with spectators. They were all there to hear public comments from several union leaders in response to the Rensselaer County Executive’s laying off of 27 public service employees.

Monte Carlo Night

There will be a Monte Carlo Night on New Year’s Eve at the Brunswick Elks Lodge #2556 from 6 pm to 1 am. The cost is $30 per person, $55 per couple. There will be a buffet dinner, dessert and a continental breakfast. Contact Joe or Cindy for reservations by December 24 at 233-7496.

65 Years And Still In Love

Edith May Face was born on May 28, 1924 to Earlston and Inez Homes Face at their home in Nassau, NY. Inez gave birth to Edith with no one home as Earlston was working as a logger and farmer. Inez had a hospital appointment in Schenectady while staying with her sister Ruth, but the baby did not wait. Edith lived in East Nassau until she was 5 years old.
They moved to Stottville (named after a Mr. Stott) where Edith’s Mother Inez was employed at the Stottville Woolen Mills as a skilled woolen weaver. Edith went to Stottville Grammar School and graduated from Hudson High School during the summer of 1942. After graduation Edith went to work for Montgomery Ward in Albany as a secretary and had an apartment on State Street in Albany.

Brunswick Library December Events

• Make Your Own Felt Ornaments, Saturday, December 11, at 12:30, ages 11 and up. Plus, we’ll have a special guest, Christie Colangione-Badavino, reading from her book, The Santa Clock.
• Decorate Holiday Cookies, Saturday, December 18, at 12:30, all ages are welcome.
• Storytime at 11 am every Saturday.
• Tuesday Night Book Group, December 14, at 7 pm, discussing To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf. The book for January is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson.
• The Book and Movie Group will meet on December 17 at 1 pm to watch and discuss How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss.
• The Knitting and Needle Arts Group meets every Thursday at 10:30. Beginners are welcome! We have charity projects with donated yarn for your idle hands.
The Library will be closed December 24 and 25 and January 1, 2011.
New Hours
Starting in January our new hours will be Monday through Wednesday, 12 to 8 pm, Thursday and Friday, 12 to 6 pm, and Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm.

Legislature Approves 2011 Rensselaer County Budget With a 2.5% Tax Levy Increase

The Rensselaer County Legislature approved a 2011 County budget that protects needed services and the County’s solid financial standing, along with reducing the amount of a proposed property tax increase.
Thanks to a cooperative effort between legislators and the County Executive, progress has been made in reducing a proposed 4.9 percent property tax increase. The spending plan protects needed County services and includes a modest 2.5 percent property tax increase.
