On Sunday, October 7, Brunswick Grange will hold its Agricultural Tailgate Sale at the Schaghticoke Fairgrounds, Rt. 67 & 40, Schaghticoke, from 8 am to 12:30 pm. More than fifty vendors will have various varieties of chickens, ducks, geese, pigeons, vegetables, plants, flowers and other agricultural items. Absolutely no dogs, cats, puppies or kittens will be allowed for sale. A donation of $15 per vendor will be charged. The event will be held rain or shine, and refreshments will be available.

The Rensselaer County Legislature – Never Forget

The family of Raymond E. Calhoun of Hoosick, who died on July 9, 2012, entered the well of the Rensselaer County Legislature on Tuesday, September 11, to be presented with a copy of the resolution passed last month that honored their patriarch. The presentation was made to the Calhoun family by District 5 Legislators Stan Brownell and Lester Goodermote, who represent the towns of Stephentown, Berlin, Petersburgh, Grafton, Hoosick and the Village of Hoosick Falls. It was clear from their comments that there is even more to the Ray Calhoun story than what was included in August’s resolution.

New Learn-to-Geocache Workshops Scheduled At State Parks
Three new learn-to-geocache workshops have been scheduled at Saratoga Spa State Park, Saratoga Springs, on September 27 at 5 pm and at Grafton Lakes State Park on September 29 at 1 pm. The cost to participate in the workshops at Saratoga Spa and Grafton Lakes is $3 per person. Please call the parks for more information and to reserve a spot in the class.

A Great Time At The Rensselaer County Schaghticoke Fair

The Rensselaer County Schaghticoke Fair has been in operation for 193 years. It is the third oldest Fair in New York State. Weather conditions were great for the entire week of the Schaghticoke Fair. On Thursday, August 30, the weather was absolutely perfect – sunny, cool and breezy. There was plenty of stuff for the whole family to see and do all day and all evening. Area farms and businesses were well represented. Friends and folks from nearby towns won blue ribbons with their vegetables and fruits. Stephentown Contributes To The County Veterans Hall Exhibition At The Fair

The former Freihofer’s Building at the Schaghticoke Fairgrounds is now the Veterans Hall. During the Rensselaer County Fair which extended over Labor Day weekend it became one of the more popular sites to visit. “The turnout and the response from veterans and those who know or love them was overwhelming,” said Jody Luskin, one of those who led a small group of dedicated volunteers in refurbishing the hall and putting together the exhibits. “It’s been a huge, huge response,” she said, with a constant stream of people browsing through the exhibits.

Sand Lake Historical Society And Bicentennial Planning Meeting
There will be a combined meeting of the Sand Lake Historical Society and the Bicentennial Planning Committee on Tuesday, September 11, at 6 pm at the Sand Lake Baptist Church, 2960 NY 43 in Averill Park. It will be a covered dish dinner. Please bring an entrée or salad. Dessert, beverages and table settings will be provided. The program will be the Bicentennial in Review. Hotter Temperatures Contribute To Greater Numbers Of Human West Nile Virus Infections
Laura C. Harrington, an expert on mosquito-borne diseases and an Associate Professor of Entomology at Cornell University, discussed the factors behind increased reports of West Nile Virus.
She said, “As of August 23, a total of 11 confirmed human cases of West Nile Virus have been reported in New York State, including one death in Onondaga County. To date, more than 700 mosquito pools have tested positive for the virus across the State.

Information And County Services Available At The Schaghticoke Fair
Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen M. Jimino and representatives of County Departments will be on hand at the Schaghticoke Fair to both offer services and provide information on programs and services available to County residents. The information and services will be available for the entire fair which runs from August 29 to September 3. County information and services will be located in the Hoosic Valley Fire Department building.
