On Monday morning, September 8, as part of Rensselaer County’s monthly Honor a Deceased Veteran Program, Thomas G. Restino was recognized. Receiving the many honors bestowed on his father was Justice Tom Restino, Jr. The ceremony, which began with Posting of the Colors by Lansingburgh veterans, was held in the Legislative Chambers. The event honored Restino’s life as a family man, veteran and community servant.

Commissioner of Aging, Carol Rosbozom will present Rensselaer County’s, Department of the Aging mission statement at a Public Hearing on September 19 at 11 am, open to all seniors in Rensselaer County. The Brunswick Sportsman’s Club will sponsor a Fall Open House Saturday, September 13, to give residents the opportunity to meet representatives and candidates for elected office this year, including gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino. Astorino is expected to arrive at the event at approximately 11:30 am.
The Fall Open House will allow residents the opportunity to learn more about the positions of elected officials and candidates on the Second Amendment and State laws like the NY SAFE Act. The Brunswick Sportsman’s Club has sponsored recent forums critical of the controversial SAFE Act and legislation infringing on constitutional rights that have drawn hundreds of residents and top elected officials.
“The Brunswick Sportsman’s Club has been committed to defending the Second Amendment and the constitutional rights of our citizens. Our Fall Open House continues our efforts to bring together supporters of the Second Amendment, and to help educate the public about the positions of elected officials and candidates on these issues,” said Club President Scott Clemens.
Along with Astorino, the event will include NYS Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin, State Senator Kathy Marchione, Rensselaer County Sheriff Jack Mahar, Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple, Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen Jimino, Rensselaer County District Attorney candidate Joel Abelove and others.
The Fall Open House will also include outdoor activities and demonstrations on the Sportsman’s Club 80 acres, and a barbecue lunch provided by members. The event will be held rain or shine from 9 am to 2 pm.
The Brunswick Sportsman’s Club is located at 78 Brunswick Sportsman’s Road in Cropseyville, just off State Route 2 and 2.4 miles east of Tamarac High School.

The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that there are 52,000 Veterans living in Rensselaer County and the surrounding five counties. Members of the military, from World War II to the War on Terror, experience a myriad of challenges, including post traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, substance abuse and mental health problems and problems associated with reintegration, such as finding employment and stable housing.
Now in its 15th year, the Hudson River Valley Ramble brings people outside to enjoy the Valley’s distinct cultural heritage and scenic beauty during the Northeast’s most beautiful time of the year. Ramble events are being held on four weekends – September 6-7, 13-14, 20-21 and 27-28. Events include guided hikes, cycling and kayaking tours, historic site walks, festivals and river explorations. With more than 200 events being offered this year, there is something for everyone. • The Albany Riverfront Jazz Festival – September 6 at 1 pm, features a veritable “who’s who” of jazz greats, critically acclaimed up and coming artists and local favorites at one of the area’s most spectacular venues.
• Discover Troy’s Amazing Architecture – September 6 at 10:30 am. Stroll downtown Troy and you’ll find a rich built environment. This one hour walking tour showcases Troy’s architectural gems and range of styles, explained by your guide from the Rensselaer County Historical Society.

Expect to see a convoy heading east at some point along Route 7 every Tuesday and Wednesday until the end of September. The convoy will consist of NYS Police, support vehicles and a 204 foot long vehicle consisting of a tractor, jeep and trailer hauling a preformed concrete bridge beam that is 141 feet long and 87 inches high. This summer marked the 40th year that the County has served as a Summer Food Sponsor operating meal sites under the Federal Summer Food Service Program. The program is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture and the New York State Department of Education to help ensure children under the age of eighteen receive nutritious meals during the summer when school is not in session. Rensselaer County has participated in the federal program since its inception.

Stephentown residents will be glad to see work finally starting this week to fix up Route 22 into a more drivable highway. Motorists, however, can expect some serious traffic delays for a number of weeks.
