Rensselaer County Undersheriff Patrick Russo was the easy winner in the primary contest for the Republican line for County Sheriff. Russo turned back the challenge of former Sheriff’s Department employee Scott Ryan, garnering nearly 65 percent of the vote county wide. Nassau Supervisor David Fleming has led a group demanding more time to read extensive documentation about Kinder-Morgan’s proposed gas pipeline through Southern Rensselaer County and Northern Berkshire County, made available late in the comment period, which he called a “document dump.” The high pressure pipeline would run through Nassau, and it includes a large compressor station sited in an area Fleming describes as residential. To Address Adult Literacy Crisis
On September 8, the world will mark the 48th annual International Literacy Day to remind us all that reading, writing, and basic math remain an elusive target for nearly 800 million adults around the globe, including one in six adults in the United States. In Rensselaer County, thousands of adults struggle with low literacy, leading to limited access to employment and other opportunities. Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County (LVORC) is part of a national network of organizations that work every day to end the adult literacy crisis. On August 8 Joe Ferrannini of Hoosick Falls-based Grave Stone Matters repaired the headstones in the “Old” Mount Ida Cemetery of several people of historical significance who had ties to eastern Renssaelear County, including Dr. Jeffery W. Thomas and Dr. Philander H. Thomas of West Sand Lake, and his wife, Laura Hull Thomas. Her grandfather was Lt. Sheriff Jack Mahar today accepted an award from the New York State Sheriff’s Association in recognition that the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office has achieved Accreditation for the Correctional Facility. Sheriff Jack Mahar has stated that this achievement is the result of efforts by the Chief of Corrections, the accreditation team, and all correctional staff and support staff that work hard each and every day to insure that our community is safe and secure from those deemed a danger to be in our community. The New York State Comptroller’s Office has recently released a new report on home foreclosure rates across the state that indicate the numbers since 2013 have returned to the levels seen in the recession that started in 2008 and peaking a year later. Dyken Pond Environmental Education Center is offering an Evening Paddle on September 9 from 5 to 6:30 pm. Bring a picnic dinner you can eat by the lake, if desired. This program is limited to 12 boats so pre-registration is required and can be done by contacting the Center at dykenpond@fairpoint.net or by calling 518-658-2055.
