There are 179 Parks and 36 Historic Sites in New York State. NYS budget rumors have five State sites closing in Rensselaer County. They are Grafton Lakes State Park, Cherry Plain State Park, Schodack Island State Park, the Bennington Battlefield and Fort Crailo. There is swimming and canoeing at both Grafton and Cherry Plain. Grafton is open year around and has over 20 miles of trails suitable for walking, mountain biking, horseback riding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Berlin Young Farmers Finish In The Top Ten Nationally

When Carl and Cynthia Greene of Berlin appeared in the well of the Rensselaer County Legislature Tuesday evening to receive a copy of the resolution passed last month recognizing their NYS 2009 Young Farmer Achievement Award, it was revealed that they had also finished in the top ten of young farmers competing on the national level at the American Farm Bureau Federation Convention in Seattle in January. Albany-Tula Alliance Announces Student Essay Contest
High school students in the Capital Region will have an opportunity to win a trip to Russia for two weeks this summer through an essay contest sponsored by the Albany-Tula Alliance. Students aged 16 to 18 who wish to compete will be asked to write a 1,500 word essay identifying and discussing an issue that Presidents Medvedev and Obama can work on together that will improve the lives of both Russians and Americans in terms of knowledge, resources and trust. Legislature Commends Berlin Young Farmer Award Winners

Two resolutions were passed at the Rensselaer County Legislative meeting on Tuesday night, January 12, relating to agriculture in Berlin and Petersburgh. The first commended Carl and Cynthia Greene for receiving the 2009 Young Farmer Achievement Award. The second carried forward from previous years the budget line for the Farmland Protection grants awarded by NY State for the Evergreen and Maple Lane Farms in Petersburgh and the Hooskip Farm, also in Petersburgh.
