Forestry Workshop In New Lebanon

“The Future of Your Woods and Wildlife” will be held on Saturday, March 24. The day long workshop will help landowners get the most out of their woodland and address some of the issues facing woodland owners today. Topics will include forest ecology and management, effects of deer and resources to help landowners. There will also be information addressing the local ecology, which will be of particular interest to Taconic Mountain landowners where the workshop will be held.

New Lebanon Town Board Action – Assessor Resigns

As spring comes to New Lebanon so, too, comes change. And while everyone is probably looking forward to spring, not everyone is as welcoming of change.
One of the more unwelcome changes discussed at Tuesday’s Town Board meeting was the surprise departure of the Town’s Assessor, Craig Surprise. After 21 years at that position, Surprise’s final day with the Town will be Thursday.

New Lebanon Foundation Trivia Night

The New Lebanon Foundation will launch its 2012 fund-raising campaign with a Trivia Night to be held on March 30 from 7 to 9 pm at the New Lebanon Junior/Senior High School on Route 22. Test your trivia knowledge in a number of diverse categories while enjoying time with your team of up to six family members and friends, or join a team on the spot. Door prizes, a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle will add to the evening’s entertainment.
For additional information please call Barbara Ruhe at 518-794-9490. The cost is $10 per person. All proceeds benefit the New Lebanon Arts and Humanities Fund, a fund of the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation.

George Rickey Sculpture Exhibit To End

The 2011 Sculpture in the Streets exhibition featuring the late American kinetic sculptor George Rickey is nearing the end of its stay in downtown Albany. On March 26, the sculptures, some as large as 14 feet high and 22 feet wide, will be taken down and returned to The George Rickey Foundation in East Chatham. Shaker Swamp Conservancy Granted Tax Exempt Status

The Shaker Swamp Conservancy, a nonprofit community based organization in New Lebanon, has recently been granted tax-exempt status by the IRS. Now a 501c3 entity, the Conservancy can seek tax-deductible donations to continue work on research into Shaker Swamp history and ecology and its potential for recreation and tourism. The mission of the Shaker Swamp Conservancy is “to preserve the Shaker Swamp as a unique and defining asset of the Lebanon Valley, to promote understanding of this natural resource and its human heritage and to create related opportunities for public access, education and recreation.”

Tsatsawassa Fire Co. Breakfast

The Tsatsawassa Protective Fire Company will hold its monthly breakfast on Sunday, March 18, with servings from 8 until 11 am at a cost of $6.   Breakfast consists of your choice of French toast or pancakes as well as bacon or sausage, toast, orange juice, applesauce, beverages and eggs prepared to your specifications.

Folk Duo Divinitress At The New Lebanon Library

Local acoustic folk duo Divinitress will be performing at the New Lebanon Library on Friday, March 9, from 7 to 9 pm. Their blend of harmonies and acoustic instruments give their music a unique and uplifting sound. This event is free and open to the public, although donations for the performers are welcome.

New Lebanon – Former New York Daily News City Editor Richard J. Blood, who nurtured young writers in the newsroom and the classroom during a long journalistic career, has died of respiratory failure.
Mr. Blood, 83, passed away on Friday, February 17, 2012, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Manhattan. He spent 28 years in the newspaper business, including a dozen at The News – first as night city editor then as day city editor – when it was the nation’s largest circulation newspaper.
