Performance Spaces for the 21st Century presents the Maryland-based dance company PEARSONWIDRIG DANCETHEATER on Friday and Saturday, August 16 and 17, at 8 pm as part of PS21’s 2013 comedy-themed season. Artistic directors Sara Pearson and Patrik Widrig have gained an international following for creating and presenting “American dance theater at its funniest and most compelling.” (Neue ZŸrcher Zeitung, Switzerland). Mud Lake Preserve Hike
The Rensselaer Land Trust is sponsoring a Mud Lake Preserve hike on Saturday, August 10, at 10 am. The RLT’s Mud Lake Preserve in Sand Lake contains a classic kettlehole bog with a floating bog mat, surrounded by a spruce-tamarack swamp. Dr. David Hunt will explain the ecology of bogs, fens and swamps.
We will see unusual plants living here, including insect-eating pitcher plants and sundews and wild cranberries. Dragonflies are abundant. You will help take a pH sample and measure peat depth and participate in a “peat passing ceremony.” The walk will be short but wet and adventurous. Wear footwear you can get very wet. The anonymous flier or pamphlet has long been an integral part of American History and its politics.
Sometimes being anonymous is important and the outcome beneficial. There was Thomas Paine’s anonymous pamphlet, “Common Sense,” which offered American colonists an argument for freedom from British rule. The Federalist Papers by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay, promoting the ratification of the U.S. Constitution, was published under a single pseudonym.

NLCS Alumni Banquet 2013

The New Lebanon Central School Alumni Reunion banquet was held this year at Jackson’s Old Chatham House in Old Chatham. For the eighth year in a row the buffet dinner was compliments of the generous Mr. Robert Burns, Class of 1949. Attending the festivities on July 13 were some 158 graduates representing the class of 1935 through the class of 2007, along with more than 70 spouses and guests.

Tsatsawassa Protective Fire Company Annual Pig Roast
On Saturday, August 17, the Tsatsawassa Protective Fire Company Inc. will hold its 25th Annual Pig Roast on the firehouse grounds located just off Route 20 in the hamlet of Brainard. Doors will open at 1 pm, and the afternoon will be filled with fun events including door prizes and games as well as hot dogs, sausage, hamburgers and drinks, all the while the ‘whole pig’ covered with foil, will be roasting on the spit in view of the attendees.
At about 5 pm the roast will be served with baked potato, applesauce, corn on the cob and of course the pork – all followed by ice cream with your choice of strawberry or chocolate sauce. Tickets may be reserved by calling 518-766-3815 at a cost of $20 for adults and $10 for children 5-12. The event is held under cover of the large pavilion in the rear of the fire house.
Completing the event will be a large raffle, and members are currently canvassing the area residents to offer them an opportunity to support this project with the purchase of tickets for which prizes have been donated by area merchants. Special thanks goes to those merchants who include Jackson’s Old Chatham House, Thoma Tire and Antiques at Bailey’s in Nassau, Lebanon Valley Speedway, Angel’s Trumpet Flowers and Gifts, Mario’s Restaurant and Hermon T. Huntley Insurance Agency, all in New Lebanon, as well as Curtis Lumber in Schodack. Additional door and game prizes will be distributed during the event.

The Grist And Saw Mills In New Lebanon
On Monday, July 22, at 7 pm the Lebanon Valley Historical Society will offer an on-location program about the Elm Tree Mills presented by Francesca Lally. The grist and saw mills are located on Mill Street in Lebanon Center, date from the third quarter of the 18th century and were in use until the mid-20th century. They were built by Elisha Gilbert, whose residence on Route 20 was the subject of Peter Watson’s talk this past April.
Francesca Lally, who has just completed her sophomore year at Miss Hall’s School and has grown up at the mills, will share her family collection of photographs and artifacts related to the operation.
Reminiscences and a discussion about the working mills will follow the presentation, along with the usual assortment of delicious refreshments.
Poetry And Jazz At The New Lebanon Library
Poet and storyteller Michael Czarnecki returns to the New Lebanon Library to present two programs on Thursday, July 25, and Friday, July 26. On Thursday at 6:30 pm Czarnecki will facilitate a workshop on haibun writing, a literary form that is gaining in popularity around the world. Originating in Japan, haibun combines condensed prose with haiku.
On Friday, also at 6:30, jazz musicians Pete Toigo, double bassist, and electric guitarist Tim Thibideau, will join Czarnecki for an evening of music and poetry. The evening will include a jazz haiku journey across America on US 20, with the spontaneity of jazz interwoven through and around poetic words.
