Caroline C. Ketchum

New Lebanon – Caroline Clovis Ketchum, 87, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2014, at the Pine Haven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Philmont, NY. She was the loving wife of the late Melvin “Bud” Ketchum, who died on July 8, 2012. They were married on July 15, 1945.

Born in Stephentown, NY, Caroline was the daughter of the late Caspar and Hazel (Hassen) Rathbun. She was raised and educated in Stephentown and New Lebanon, NY, where she resided for much of her life.

Caroline served as a domestic housekeeper for 40 years to several families in Lebanon, NY, and Canaan, NY. She loved her family and her home and enjoyed gardening, yard work, sewing and her pets.

She was the much loved mother of Nancy and husband William Petersoli and the late David Melvin Ketchum and the dear aunt of Lori Stroehlin.

A private graveside service was held in the Hancock Cemetery, Hancock, MA, on Monday, October 13, at 4 pm.

Arrangements were by the Hall & Higgins Funeral Home, Stephentown.

Anti Gas Pipeline Advocates Schedule A Public Meeting

Members of the group Stop NY Fracked Gas Pipeline (SNYFGP), which is advocating against a new high pressure gas pipeline planned to run through parts of Columbia County, are done waiting for pipeline officials to schedule a public meeting on the subject in New Lebanon and have gone ahead and scheduled their own.

“We are taking the initiative,” said SNYFGP member Bruce Shenker Tuesday. The meeting will take place at the New Lebanon Town Hall on October 29 at 6:30 pm.

BEHOLD! New Lebanon Columbus Day Weekend Activities

BEHOLD! New Lebanon is a new type of living museum that celebrates and explores contemporary rural American life. Over the course of four weekends between Labor Day and early November, more than 50 country guides invite visitors into their homes and work spaces, where they practice cooking, farming, cattle raising, automobile racing and mechanics, furniture-making, and much more. The guides are not costumed docents recalling old-world skills, they are actual townspeople.

Tsatsawassa Fire Co. Breakfast

The Tsatsawassa Protective Fire Company will resume its monthly breakfast on Sunday, October 19, with servings from 8 to 11:30 am. Breakfast consists of your choice of French toast or pancakes as well as bacon or sausage, toast, orange juice, applesauce, beverages and eggs prepared to your specifications for a cost of $7 for adults, $4 for ages 5-12, with children under five served free.

Support your local fire company while visiting with friends and neighbors and enjoying a hearty breakfast to start your day. The firehouse is located behind the post office near the intersection of Routes 20 and 66 North in the hamlet of Brainard. For more information call 518-766-3815.

New Lebanon Library Concerts

New England Folk-Rock Singer and Songwriter Tom Abdow will be performing an acoustic concert of folk, country and rock music at the New Lebanon Library on Friday, October 10, starting at 6:30 pm. Abdow has performed throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic areas.

Boom And Bust And Beyond 

On Saturday, October 11, at 4 pm the New Lebanon Library will host a special Columbus Day weekend performance of Boom and Bust and Beyond, a concert of vintage American songs. The program will include songs from the 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s. Composers such as Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Harold Arlen, Rogers and Hammerstein, among others, will be represented. Vikki True will sing with Doug Schmolze on guitar and vocals and Eric Martin on violin/viola. There will be sing-alongs also. All ages are welcome at this event, which is free and open to the public.

Schmolze trained in guitar at the Berklee School of Music and in voice with Frank Kelley. He performs in a variety of venues throughout the Berkshires and beyond. Vikki True is well known for her soulful renditions of blues, jazz and gospel. Eric Martin studied at the University of Limerick, Ireland. He plays classical and traditional styles.

For further information on these free events, please call the Library at 518-794-8844. The public is welcome, and the events are free. The Library is located at 550 State Route 20, ¼ mile north of the yellow blinking light at the intersection of Routes 20/22.

Community Dance At SLCA

Come join your friends and neighbors at the Sand Lake Center for the Arts for a fun, easy, community dance on Sunday, October 5, at 1:30 pm. There will be live music provided by Set Americain, a local dance band, two members of which, Steve and Betsy Fry, live in Averill Park. The band specializes in the traditional music of Quebec, New England, Ireland and Europe.

Gail Griffith, also from the Averill Park area, will teach fun, simple dances from around the U.S. and the world for every age and ability. No experience is needed, and no partner is needed. All dances will be taught – circles, contras and squares.

Tickets cost $8 for adults and $5 for those under 18. Reservations can be made at 518-674-2007 or www.slca-ctp.org. SLCA is located at 2880 NY 43, Averill Park, NY, and is fully handicapped accessible. There is plenty of free parking.

Birthday Party In New Lebanon For The Reluctant Reformer

Samuel Tilden, Governor of New York, Presidential Candidate and New Lebanon’s favorite son, was born in that town on February 9, 1814. To celebrate his 200th birthday, just a bit belatedly, the New Lebanon Historical Society hosted a party for the community last Sunday at the Shatford Park Pavilion. The bash included a pig roast, a vast and wonderful assortment of potluck foods, birthday cakes based on a Tilden family recipe and music provided by Wally Stock playing a collection of period recordings on his 1902 Columbia phonograph.
