To the Editor:
We read with interest the letter from Lenore Humphrey regarding the efforts of Heinz Noeding.
We know neither Ms. Humphrey nor Mr. Noeding and, shamefully, we are unaware of the school board issues.
What does seem obvious to us, however, is how hostile this letter is.

Letter To The Editor – From The Superintendent
Letter to Editor:
I read the letter to the Editor in the February 12 issue from Heinz Noeding of Petersburgh regarding his concerns with the finances of the Berlin Central School District. I want to thank Mr. Noeding for spending some time reviewing the last 10 year audits of the school district in an effort to understand the funding and expenditures of school districts. His concern with the expense of the school district and the economic climate has also been an issue of many hours of board of education discussion about reducing expenditures to contain costs for the last several years. However, some important information was left out of his statistics. [Read more…] about Letter To The Editor – From The Superintendent
Letter To The Editor – The Misguided Board Of The Berlin School District
To the Editor:
Reality television has come to the Berlin Central School District. After witnessing the last “Budget Workshop” meeting of the BCSD, I’m trying to determine whether the Board members were auditioning for “Survivor” or “The Gong Show.” Here’s a sampling of some of the comments made by Board members to their fellow Board members: “Shut up, I’m talking!” and, “You don’t tell me what to do!” and, my favorite inter-board communication “Go to hell!” So much for civil discourse.

Letter To The Editor – Take Your Advice And…
To the Editor:
After reading about the joint Berlin/Petersburgh Town Board meeting that was reported in the February 26, 2010 Eastwick, I wish to congratulate the town boards on their resolve to improve and add to their programs for our towns’ youth. Kudos to the town boards!
Actually, the main reason for my letter is regarding Heinz Noeding. Isn’t it amazing that a man would tout himself as a banker; considering what our country is going through right now, I certainly wouldn’t tell any one if I were one. Banker leaves a bad taste in your mouth, doesn’t it? [Read more…] about Letter To The Editor – Take Your Advice And…
Letter To The Editor – Between A Rock And A Hard Place
To the editor,
Yes, this district is between a rock and a hard place. The opening sentence in the Eastwick’s March 5 edition regarding the situation of the Berlin Central School District is true! Due to the district administration and most board of education members’ determination to consolidate it would appear there are no other options to deal with the current economic crisis. Unfortunately they have decided to close their minds and take the easy way out by making the children, taxpayers and communities suffer.

Letter To The Editor – Congratulations To Charlotte Gregory And The BC School Board!
(Editor’s note: This letter was written on Wednesday, March 17, after the letter announcing the closing of the Grafton School was handed out at the school.)
To the Editor:
It was with great joy that I read the letter from Charlotte Gregory today announcing the closure of the Grafton Elementary School. The Board had a meeting last night, or should I say a “workshop”? Ha! That Board is so clever! If it is only a workshop and not a meeting, they aren’t obliged to follow the laws pertaining to meetings, like making public announcements to be open to the public. Or are they? Good question. I sure hope legalities were not twisted out of recognition.

Letter To The Editor – Kids And Community At GES
Dear Sir,
I am sending you a copy of the letter I sent today to NY State Senator Roy McDonald regarding our Grafton Elementary School:
Dear Mr. Roy McDonald,
I recently came from Colombia, as US permanent resident with my two little girls, ages 6 and 1½ year old. Our 6 year old daughter is in first grade in Grafton Elementary School. When we came in September 2009 she did not speak any English; she just knew basic words such as colors and farm animals. She is now reading, writing and speaking in English. She has been involved in many interesting projects in science, art, math, and gym. The work of the teachers and staff at GES has been particularly special for her.

Letter To The Editor – The Pit And The Tower
To The Editor:
This is in response to the proposal for a zoning variance that would allow for the construction of a colossal cell tower in the middle of the tiny village of Cherry Plain.

Letter To The Editor – Feeling Gouged By The Authorities
Dear Editor:
On January 21, 2010, I received a non-moving violation (ticket) for failure to use my turn signal. I was at a “T” intersection (on the lower part of the T). No traffic was coming from the right or left. By the time I was pulled over (est. 400′ from the intersection), I couldn’t remember if I had used my turn signal or not.

An Immodest Proposal
by John Leahy, the Jonathan Swift of Grafton
The Berlin Central School District wants to close the Grafton school and bus the Grafton kids down to the crumbling Berlin school building to save money for the district taxpayers. Saving money will be important, especially as the loss of a local school will probably have a strong negative effect on the Town of Grafton’s economy as the desirability to locate in Grafton plummets, property values decline and tax revenues drop.
