Digging Potatoes And Grinding Apples

Thursday, October 5, 1837: Today I went to Pittsfield with my covered wagon and carried my wife  and two oldest daughters and two sons to cattle show. We called to Roberts Tavern on the mountain to what is called Broad’s old stand and I paid ten cents for bitters and crackers. Mr. Bull of Albany delivered an address and then I and my wife and daughters went to brother Jay Wylie and took tea. I paid about 40 cts for my two sons to see the shows and for cake and clams. Some snow and rain this afternoon and quite dark coming home this evening, a large crowd today of people, especially in the meeting house.
Friday: We dug potatoes on my Rodgers Farm and Daniel Kites dug for me on shares for one out of eight. We fetched home 35 bushels tonight. [Read more…] about Digging Potatoes And Grinding Apples

Sunday, August 14, 1837: Today my daughter Sarah had a wasp sting her on the temple and it struck all over her and in a short time large blotches came out all over her, which lasted more than an hour and during that time she was in great agony. Wednesday, May 10, 1837: This morning I sent for E. Pierce and James Glass and Rowland Danford and Platt Wylie and they came to help me up with my lame cow. Sunday, April 30, 1837: This morning Deacon Pierce went up and engaged Elder Jones to preach the Funeral Sermon tomorrow at twelve o’clock, and engaged Alonzo Rodgers to make the coffin and Mr. John Russel came and I had him go and engaged Mr. Hires and Mr. Pattison to dig the grave and Platt Wylie rode to Lebanon to Nathaniel Nichols store and had some grave clothes charged, I do not know the price.  [Read more…] about The Morning After Mother Holcomb’s Death…

Mother Holcomb Dies From A Fall

Wednesday, April 12, 1837: Today a boy named Cushman flung from a horse and got killed. He is from Greenbush school, he came into this neighborhood with Mr. Buckley and wife to Adam Brown’s on a visit.
