Semifinals (from gold/white/blue): Peter Martin III (4) and Kevin Weeden (5) defeated Dave Vogt (6) and Tom Vogt Sr (10). After Pete’s long birdie putt and Kevin’s par on hole 2, Pete and Kevin held a 3.5 to 0.5 lead. Kevin had a par on hole 3 and Pete picked up another win to go up 5.5 to 0.5. After 2 pars on hole 4, Pete and Kevin had a commanding 7 to 1 lead. Pete got the win on hole 5 and Tom’s par was good enough for a win. The match sat at 8 to 2. Pete had a par on the par 5 sixth hole to get his team to 9 points. After Kevin won hole 7 and Pete’s par picked up a half point, Kevin and Pete had enough points, 10.5, for the victory. After winning both halves, the Vogt were eliminated.
For the match, Kevin and Pete were only 5 over as a team after 7 holes.
Definitely a good score from the blues. They had a combined 7 pars and a birdie. Ezra Caron (5) and Devin Babson (13) defeated Mike Marpe (5) and Garth Duclos (6). Ezra had a par on hole 1 and so did Garth. Mike and Ezra halved hole 2 with pars. Devin, with a stroke, and Garth also tied hole 2. Devin picked up a par on hole 3 and Ezra also won to go up 4 to 2. Ezra won hole 4 and Garth and Devin had a push. After Ezra’s birdie on hole 5 and Devin’s win, the match was 7.5 to 2.5 with Devin and Ezra leading. Ezra and Garth parred hole 6. Mike and Ezra split hole 7 with pars but Devin’s par was good enough for a win. The match was 9.5 to 4.5 with 2 holes left. It would take a small miracle for Mike and Garth but there was hope after Ezra and Mike tied with pars and Garth won with a par. The match was 10 to 6. Ezra and Devin had an 11 point lead in points so it was almost over. After Ezra had a birdie and Devin had a par, there was no doubt who was in the championship. After winning both halves, Mike and Garth were also eliminated. So the two teams that dominated all year were out. For the match, Ezra was even par. He had 5 pars and 2 birdies. Devin had 3 pars which was a season high for him. The championship came down to the defending champs, Peter Martin III and Kevin Weeden vs the 2nd year team of Ezra Caron and Devin Babson.
Championship Match: Ezra Caron (5) and Devin Babson (13) defeated Peter Martin III (4) and Kevin Weeden (5). Ezra was getting one stroke on hole 4 and Devin was getting 8 strokes, every hole but hole 8. Pete and Kevin started 9 strokes down. Devin and Ezra had a little trouble off the tee on hole 1 and Kevin and Pete took advantage. Despite missing 2 putts inside 5 feet, Kevin and Pete were up 1.5 to 0.5. Kevin and Devin both parred hole 2, but Devin’s stroke got him the win. Pete and Kevin both parred hole 3. Devin’s bogey earned him a tie. The score was 4 to 2 Pete and Kevin. Ezra had a par on hole 4 for a win. Kevin’s par was good enough for a half point after Devin hit a great shot from 190 yards down the shoot and had a bogey. Pete had a birdie on hole 5 for a win. Everyone else had pars, but Devin won the hole with his stroke. The match was 5.5 to 4.5 with Kevin and Pete leading. Devin had a par on hole 6 and everyone else had a bogey. The match was 6 to 6 going to hole 7. Pete had a nice birdie for the win. Devin drive the green and 2 putted for a birdie. The match was 7 to 7 with Pete and Kevin down 1 overall stroke. Ezra had a great chip and birdied hole 8. Kevin caught a break as Devin drove his tee shot out of bounds beyond the hole. Devin then hit a flop shot from the edge of the woods to less than 6 feet. Kevin had a par for a win. So the match was 8 to 8 after 8, with Kevin and Pete still down a stroke. With a 13 handicap, you’re waiting for a bad hole. It never happened. Devin and Ezra averaged 8.3 strokes combined on hole 9. Their best score was 7 strokes. Not today. Both players bagged pars by getting up and down. Unbelievable. Kevin had a par, his 7th of the day (a season best), for a loss. But when Devin shoots his lifetime best, 39, it is tough to beat. He was 9 strokes under his handicap which tied the best net score of the season for the entire league. He had 4 pars and a birdie. He never had a birdie in the league all year. Crazy. I’m still shaking my head. Kevin shot 37, which ties his best score for the season. Pete had 2 birdies. All of this was not enough as Devin and Ezra denied Kevin and Pete back-to-back titles! Congrats to the winners.
Stay tuned next week for the end-of-season tournament results.
