A Visit From Brother William
Tuesday, March 5, 1843: Today I took my cutter and carried Sarah to school and this afternoon. I rode with Henry P. Wylie over to the Presbyterian meeting house to an anti-rent meeting and I paid ninety one cts that is one cent on an acre in addition to what is paid.We had an address from one Mr. Thompson.
Wednesday: Today I took my cutter and rode to the north part of the town to Justus Jones and got a pattern or one half of an equalizing beehive to see how to make said hives, and today I called to Mr. Daniel Brady’s and his wife handed me ten dollars which was for house rent and five dollars remains unpaid yet.
Friday: Today I took my cutter and carried my wife over to brother Simeon Wylie’s on a visit. Today quite a thaw.
Saturday: Today I drew a copy of a life lease that Aaron B. Chapman gave his grandfather of a piece of land that the old man gave him a deed of and let the said Aaron have the copy, and I walked to Lebanon with said Aaron to Squ John Bull’s and had him look at the before mentioned life lease. Said Bull told Aaron that he could not come in possession until his grandfather’s decease. My boys wired the hogs’ noses.
Thursday, March 14: Tonight our schoolmaster stayed with us and on this evening I attended a school meeting and it was voted to not raise money to build a school house and the meeting was adjourned to our next annual meeting.
Friday: I tended to my chores and some squally and on this evening or nearly daydown my brother William from the west, that is from the town of Collins three miles south of Lodi Village in Erie County and 34 miles south Buffalo to remain with us on a visit. Saturday: Today some stormy, on this day I walked down to the old widow Landers with brother Wm a spell.
Tuesday: Today I walked over to the Presbyterian meeting house to an anti-rent meeting and then I called into Hiram W. Brown’s where they were making committeemen to make a nomination for town officers.
Monday, March 25: This afternoon I walked up to Squ Nathan Howard’s to a nomination meeting to nomination of six committee to meet the other committee to nominate the town officers, and I paid six cts for a letter to Charlotte to Howard’s post office from Hannah Bush.
Tuesday: This afternoon I took my single wagon and rode to Hancock Village. I called to Mr. Abel Gorton’s and took up a note of two hundred fifty dollars and gave a new note for two hundred fifty dollars payable in one year from the first day in April in 1844 and I likewise gave said Gorton another note for seventeen dol and fifty cts on demand bearing date from the first of April which was for interest money on the big note for one year.
Wednesday: Today our district school was out, Mr. George Maxon four months expires at 11 dol per. Today brother Wm returns from Pittsfield on a visit to brother Sylvester.
Thursday: Today brother Wm went to Hoosick to his wife and father, and tonight we kept a pack peddler, an Irishman, charged him 2/6 pence and took a linen handkerchief. Today a school meeting to break up the district, but I did not attend.
