Tuesday, November 21, 1843: Some rainy. I tended to chores and this afternoon I walked onto West Hill to look of Ezekiel Knapp’s colt but it would not mate mine. From there I walked to Frederick Everett’s store and had a pair of thick boots charged for myself, price not agreed.
Wednesday: Today I walked over to Christopher Clifford and engaged him to auctioneer my land on next Thursday at Alanson Carpenter’s and I put up a notice of sale at said Carpenter’s and another notice at Adams Mill and the third at Randall A. Brown’s store and I called to Howard’s post office and paid 19 cts for a letter from Brother William. I borrowed Franklin Bull lanthorn for it was a dark night, and on the way I called to the mill and got John F. boots that Mr. Ayres had made.
Thursday: Today I walked to Hoosic and stayed to Mr. David Barnhart’s at or near the village at the Falls. I went on business for brother Wm, he had wrote to me to see his Father Barnhart and find out if he meant to collect the borrowed money or secure him by mortgage and likewise to see what could be done or get any assistance to get his wife home again. When I got to Hoosic I found brother Wm crazy wife to her Father Barnhart, she had been nine weeks on the road from home in the town of Collins, Erie County to Hoosic.
Friday: Today I continued to Hoosic. I went from Mr. David Barnhart’s to his son-in-law John Covey and stayed tonight.
Saturday: On this morning while I was to Hoosic to Mr. John Covey’s I bargained with him and bought a two year old colt and he considered said colt sound or said he had a wind gall on the leg and said was not afraid to warrant it to never hurt the colt and he to carry me to Stephentown and deliver me the colt at my house and am to pay him thus, I am to let him have a certain shay I now have in use and coming three year old heifer that I expect to calve in Dec, delivered to him at my house and about ten o’clock today he started with me and his hired negro man rode said colt and we got to my house at six o’clock this evening and Covey and negro stays with me tonight.
Sunday: This morning said Covey started for home and took along his shay lashed behind his wagon and said young cow likewise as is before agreed on, which makes our bargain square and I went with him and helped drive the cow on the way about three miles.
