Spring is less than three weeks away, at least on the calendar. One of the first native plants up in wet soil in the Eastern U.S. is Skunk Cabbage (Symplocarpus foetidus), which is considered an herb.
The plant generates its own heat and can be seen growing in snow. Its skunk-like smell attracts flies that pollinate its flowers.
