If it’s Maple Sugar season, one of the area’s foremost places to visit is Ioka Valley Farm on Route 43 in Hancock, Massachusetts, just over the state line from Stephentown. The farm features maple syrup from the Berkshires, as well as such other maple products as Butter, Cream, Mustard, Granola and Barbecue Sauce. Visitors to the Sugar House are always welcome, not only to peruse the fine selection of maple products, but to tour the maple producing facility and be entertained by Ms. Terri, who has enlightened and entertained visitors for more than 20 years.
The farm was established in 1936, when Robert and Dorothy Leab drove 13 head of cattle over Brodie Mountain from Lanesboro. Once known as a “poor farm” because of its worn out soil, the Leabs, through lots of hard work, turned it into a successful and highly sustainable family farm. Their grandson Rob and his wife Melissa (Missy) now represent the third generation of Leabs to work the farm.
Maple season isn’t the only time you can enjoy Ioka Valley Farm. Fall brings with it “Pick your own Pumpkins,” animal petting and outdoor play areas and a pumpkin slingshot. Other fall treats include hayrides, hay tunnels and a mini corn maze. Winter brings the opportunity to ride in Santa’s Cap to cut your own Christmas Tree.
Don’t feel like cooking, super breakfasts and lunches are available during the seasons at Calf-A.
