The Death of George’s Daughter, L. Angeline

February 16, 2018 By eastwickpress

Monday, December 5, 1842: On this evening I had Platt Wylie’s horse and put to my cutter and rode to Canaan after Doctor Wilcox for L. Angeline, and he agreed to come early next morning and I returned home by half past ten this evening and quite a snow storm on the way down and on part the way home Tonight Doctor Ludwick Green came and stayed tonight with us.

Tuesday: This morning at 10 o’clock Doctor Wilcox came and gave L. Angeline a puke and other medicine and injections, he left for her but considered her not dangerous. Towards night I made a door and put it on the hinges to go from my barn floor down stairs into my stables. On this morning Geo P. went to elder Mathew Jones for L. Angeline to have him come and talk with her and said Elder Jones came and she got great satisfaction of mind concerning her future state. Tonight I got but little rest for L. Angeline had afflictions arise in her mind and she talked with me concerning her dream to warn her that her time was near that she must die and her sick and feeble mother got up and put on her clothes and went in to her room and gave her consolation of mind, but returned to bed in the course of an hour. Charlotte was up all night. Maryann Chapman watched tonight.

Wednesday: On this morning I took my cutter and carried Maryann Chapman home. Early this morning Alonzo Merrils went after Elder Jones for L. Angeline. He came and talked to her again and she from this time was happy and resigned to die, only wanted to live for the comfort of her near and dear connections. Today we see that she is growing worse and sinking and about two o’clock she sank so low she could not speak for some time before she came to. We thought that she was dying for nearly one hour and at four o’clock Orra Holcomb went with his team to Canaan after Doctor Wilcox. The doctor sent a puke and injections and other medicine but could not come and sent word that he would early tomorrow. She took the medicine and we thought that she had got relief. Orra Holcomb took 25 cts and bought one pint of rum on his way to Canaan for me. Tonight sister Polly Wylie and cousin Verona Holcomb watched with L. Angeline. Today Elder Smith visited us and others. Tonight L. Angeline began to be deranged by spellsv

Thursday: Today Doctor Wilcox came again and administered medicine again, but did not say her complaint was cureable on account of the complaint in one side of her head and of one side of her whole body that she has complained of for a number of years but the complaint more severe, her having a hard cold and high fever but the doctor says symptoms of the fever not raging very hard. Tonight Jane Gardner and Deborah Wylie watched with L. Angeline. Today I took my cutter and rode to Hancock and I got two gallons molasses and three lbs 10 oz loaf sugar and one oz camphor gum. I called to Doc White’s and paid 12 cts for one pint of rum. Tonight we were not quite so alarmed about L. Angeline.

Friday: Today said Doctor Wilcox came and renewed the same way of doctoring. Today I mended barnyard gate and towards night I took my cutter and rode to Dwight Platt’s store and got trusted for two pounds of salaratus 20 cts and one oz nutmeg 12 cts and from there I rode to Sylvester Gardners to have his wife come with me to watch but she could not come and I got Elder Smith’s daughter Sibel and she watched with James Glass’s wife. Tonight L. Angeline was so deranged and her case so alarming Charlotte continued up nearly all night.

Saturday: This morning at 3 o’clock I waked my two sons and they took the cutter and fetched brother Simeon Wylie and wife and called and got Frederick Russel to take his team and go to Canaan after Doctor Wilcox. Today at ten o’clock Doctor Wilcox came and two Mr. Fords with him. He found that L. Angeline was sinking fast and I told him I wanted Doctor Mattocks from Troy and it was agreed and I had Simeon Wylie Jnr take his team and start at half past twelve for Troy. I handed him a crown to bare his expenses. Simeon went to Doctor Mattocks and he could not come but sent his partner Doctor Robertson but he got here too late after. Doctor Wilcox gave phisic and injection but to no purpose. She lay in the agonies of death all the afternoon until eight o’clock this evening, and expired with house full of connections and friends and neighbors to witness the awful heart render scene. We retired to rest after midnight

L. Angeline Holcomb was 18 at the time of her death.
