Scouts from Troop 222 in Petersburgh walked up to the Petersburgh Ambulance Squad building as part of their meeting on Monday. [private]At the Squad they met Amy Manchester who gave them an overview of what the Ambulance does for our community. The scouts eventually moved into the back of the Ambulance where Amy went over first aid for Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke, what to do for bleeding and stabilizing the neck in a car accident. The scouts were able to check their O2 sats and their pulse while learning about what can affect those vital signs and why first responders need to know if you are on any medications.
They learned about the “Good Samaritan Law” and the training that the members go through to be on the Ambulance Squad. The scouts learned about bee stings and allergic reactions along with what can be done to help someone having a reaction. The scouts heard about the rise in Heroin overdoses in the area and how the squad has Naxalone (The opiate antidote), and why using illicit drugs is a bad choice that can ruin your life or even take your life.
They heard about how many calls the squad has been on this year and it was over 70 so far. Hopefully the scouts are a little more prepared if they come across an accident or someone who is hurt.
