Saturday, October 31, 1840: Today Mr. L. Irons sent Mr. William Abrams and paid me one dollar and fifty cents and I gave up the colt that had broke into my enclosure about ten days past. I had advertised said colt and taken other pains to find an owner.
[Private]Monday, November 2: Today I walked up to Simon Cranston’s to election and voted the Van Buren ticket. I returned home about two o’clock and husked corn on the hill
Tuesday: I drew rails and laid up fence next to the garden and towards night I went up to Philander Hatch to raise a shed.
Wednesday: I took my single wagon and carried my wife to James Adams on a visit and from there I walked to election to Hiram W. Brown’s. I paid 37 cts for my dinner. The Democratic ticket had the majority in this town. This evening I returned to James Adams and spent the evening and took tea and paid said Adams for hooping casks, which was 82 cts.
Friday: We butchered a bull and Mr. Manual Buten helped and I paid him fifty cts cash and I carried the bull’s hide and sold to the Shakers at four and a half cts per pound, weight 72 pounds and I carried a quarter of beef. I tried to sell it from Pool Hill to Everett’s Store but could not sell it. Geo P went with me, we got home about nine this evening.
Saturday: Today I went to Pittsfield with my beef and sold it to one man. It came to thirteen dollars and thirty one cts, weight four hundred and 39 pounds and I sold two dollars worth of apples and I sold seven cabbages for 44 cts. Geo P went with me, we got home about seven this evening.
Sunday: Today I took my covered wagon and carried my wife and three daughters to Asa Sheldon’s to the funeral of his child, a son about three years old, Elder Grant preached.
Tuesday: Today I worked on the highway with my team part of the day with a plow and part of the day with my wagon drawing gravel.
Wednesday: Today I chopped and drew a load of wood to the school house from my Rodgers farm. On Monday Mr. Dwight Bailey began the school at 12 dollars per month.[/Private]
