Berlin’s Baseball Team Honors Its Five Seniors At Their Final Game Of The Year

May 18, 2017 By eastwickpress

The Mountaineers traveled to Green Island this past week for a pair of games against the Heatly Hornets.  [private]Both ended in heartbreaking losses for Berlin, as despite a 7th inning rally, they dropped the first game of the double header 10-6.  Junior Tyler Kellar led Berlin, going 3 for 4 at the plate, driving in three runs, and scoring one himself.  Seniors Garrett Fiske and Mike Hicks along with Ilan Mikit and Phil Doin each picked up a pair of hits as well.  All nine starters in the game collected at least one hit.  The second game was a good old fashioned pitcher’s duel between Heatly’s Mike Richmond and Berlin’s Josh Kluck.  Despite allowing only 2 runs on one hit and three walks, as well as eight strikeouts by Kluck in his complete game, Berlin dropped the contest by a 2 to 1 score.

Friday May 12 marked the final game of the year, and despite the emotion of Senior Day, the Mountaineers never really got untracked in the game against New Lebanon’s Tigers. Garrett Fiske went 2 for 3 with a double and run scored, Junior Tyler Kellar also went 2 for 3 at the plate. The final score was 19-1, New Lebanon.

The team’s five seniors were honored at the end of the game. Coach Josh Weaver told The Eastwick Press, “These seniors have been the heart and soul of our baseball team the entire year and you can tell how much it meant for them out there tonight. I have coached Fiske and Houle since modified and to have watched them grow as ball players and men makes me proud to have worked with them as long as I have. All my seniors, Mike, Matt, Pat, Garrett and Chris have come so far this year and it’s a shame to see them go because I am going to miss them being out here and that brotherhood that baseball has instilled in all of us.  I know they all have very bright futures in front of them.”

The Girls’ softball team went up against Emma Willard this past week, but came out on the short end of an 11-2 score.  The Jesters scored 7 runs in the 4th inning to break the game open.  Bailey Catlin tripled for the Lady Mountaineers in the loss with Haley Maxon and Kaylie Hayes collecting the other Berlin hits. [/private]
