A Heartbreaking Loss For The Berlin Girls Softball Team

May 11, 2017 By eastwickpress

The Heatly Hornets came out on top in a game that saw the two teams swap leads several times.  The Lady Mountaineers were on top when Heatly homered twice in the bottom of the fifth to take a 7 to 5 lead.[private] A seventh inning walk to Haley Maxon, a triple by Danielle Morse and a game-tying single by Gabby Hall brought Berlin back, only to see the game slip away in the bottom of the seventh.  A throwing error allowed the Hornets to score the winning run for the 8-7 victory.

Things were never close in a contest with Loudonville Christian, as the Eagles senior pitcher Erin Mullaly struck out 18 Berlin batters and drove in 5 runs.  Her no-hitter was broken up by a lone single in the 7th, as Loudonville cruised to the 9-0 win.  Berlin hosted Rensselaer for a double header on Monday afternoon, May 8, dropping both games, the first 26 to 6 and the second 11 to 3 in five innings.  The Rensselaer pitchers held Berlin to just 3 hits in each game.

The Berlin Boys Baseball squad also hosted the Rensselaer Rams in a double-header on Monday, May 8.  The first game was very close, as Junior Henry Ruebel pitched five strong innings, allowing only two runs and striking out four.  Despite Ruebel’s efforts, the Mountaineers fell by a 4 to 1 score.  Senior Garrett Fiske went 1 for 2 at the plate with a double, scoring Berlin’s only run when he was driven in by fellow Senior Matt Dundas.  Rensselaer dominated the second game, posting a 10 to 0 win.  A game scheduled for Friday May 12 at home against the New Lebanon Tigers will be Senior Day, and if Mother Nature ever cooperates, the team’s final game of the season. [/private]
