A Circus In Town & July 4 At Pool Hill

May 11, 2017 By eastwickpress

Saturday, June 27, 1840: Today I cleaned out my celler and repaired the celler door. [private]Today my sons took my two horse pleasure wagon and carried their two oldest sisters to Lebanon to Ludwick Babcock’s to a circus and I paid one dol and fifty cts for them all to go into said circus.

Monday, June 29: This afternoon I took my single wagon and carried my wife to cousin Samuel Holcomb’s. We went to see him for he is quite sick and from cousin Samuel’s I rode to Hancock and Elijah Howard rode with me. I carried three pelts, that is calf skins, to Elick Hadsell’s and he credited me for the same.

Friday, July 3: Today I took my single wagon and my wife rode with me and we went to see cousin Samuel Holcomb. He continues to be quite sick. We came home round by the way of my Rodgers farm and I fetched home the drum part to draw water and this afternoon I made a well curb and Mr. Wm. Chambkin helped us take our pump out of the well. We are not to put it in use no more. We helped said Chambkin hoe for his helping us.

Saturday: I continued to make a platform and windlass to my well. Today my two sons went onto Pool Hill to celebrate independence and today brother Beers and wife came and stayed with us.

Tuesday, July 7: Today I took my covered wagon and carried my wife and brother Simeon Wylie and wife to cousin Samuel Minor’s in Windsor. On the way we called in Dalton to Daniel Kites’ and took dinner. I fetched my youngest daughter Sarah and left her to brother Jay Wylie’s at Pittsfield as we passed along. We got to cousin Minor’s about five this afternoon and took tea and then at night we walked up to his son Samuel’s and stayed tonight. I was quite unwell with the asthma and this morning rainy.

Thursday: We returned home from Windsor. We came to the east part of Pittsfield near the mountain to Old Mr. Merry’s. He was not to home but his wife paid me two dollars and 15 cts yet due and we came to brother Jay Wylie’s and took dinner and tea. While we stopped I walked up to old Mr. Joseph Fairfield’s to see what his wife doctored her salt rheum. She gave a weed called saltrheum weed or called Keeash. I called to Mrs Frances and got my two oldest daughters’ straw hats that had been whitened and repaired and paid one dol and 52 cts. At six o’clock this afternoon we started from Pittsfield and got home at nine this evening.  [/private]
