Sally J. (Atwater) Thompson, 61, of Lyndonville, VT, died, with her loving family at her side, February 1, 2017, at St Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center following a long battle with Early Onset Alzheimer’s Disease.
[private]Sally was born in Troy, NY to the late William and Jeanne (White) Atwater and was raised in Stephentown. She was a graduate of New Lebanon Central School and Johnson State College in Vermont. She enjoyed reading, golf, camping, trips to the beach, ice hockey, and she was an avid Red Sox fan. Sally was a thoughtful, caring person, a wonderful cook, and was known for her sense of humor. An animal lover, she was never without cats, and she loved her dog, Gunner. She was a much loved wife, mother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. Sally worked in finance, accounting, and human resources management during the course of her career; she retired in 2008 due to her health. She faced her illness with courage and grace.
Sally is survived by her loving husband, Duane Thompson; her beloved daughter Heather Hamling, her cherished grandchildren, Michael, Robbie, and Ella Hamling, all of Raleigh, NC; her sister, Constance Atwater of Guilderland; her brother David Atwater and his wife, Eva, of Berlin; her nephew, Keith McKeon, of South Kona, HI; her aunt, Nancy Wassenaar of Norfolk, VA; her sisters-in law: Linda Winot (Bill Hood) of Lyndonville, VT, Bonnie Lacaillade of Florida and Patricia Hubbard of Waterford, VT, and their families; as well as many cousins and friends. She is greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held at the Stephentown Federated Church on April 22 at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Sally’s name to the Caledonia Home Health Care Hospice, 161 Sherman Drive, St. Johnsbury, VT 05819, or to the Stephentown Federated Church, 1513 Garfield Nassau Rd, Stephentown, NY 12168.
