Tuesday, January 7, 1840: I tended to my chores and chopped wood to the door and this evening I took my cutter and carried my two daughters to cousin Samuel Holcomb and left them to singing school and they went to Squ Sylvester Howard’s and stayed and I returned home.[private] I had not gone but a few rods and I turned over and broke my cutter fill and hurt my shoulder. I returned to cousin Samuel and left my cutter to be mended and I borrowed Elijah Howard’s cutter to come home.
Wednesday: This morning I rode up to Squ Sylvester Howard’s and fetched home my two daughters. On the way I called to Mr. Platt’s store and paid six cts for ribbon and six cts for writing paper and today I returned home with Elijah Howard’s cutter and got mine. Cousin Samuel had put in a new fill and charged one dollar and I went on to Troy and delivered two hundred pounds of cheese to Bigelow Pierce and Nicks.
Thursday: This morning I sold a cheese to the tavern keeper at nine cts, twenty three pounds, two dol seven cts and my bill was fifty six cts and he paid me the balance. I came out of Troy at half past eleven o’clock and came to a blacksmiths near Sliter’s tavern and got my cutter shoe welded and bolts and paid 19 cts and I paid 25 cts gates. I got home at six o’clock this evening. On the way today I called to Coleman’s store and paid four cts for a box matches. Today my two oldest daughters went sleigh riding to Chatham with the young people of Lebanon Springs.
Friday: Today I tended to my chores. A blind man called and I gave him nine cts.
Tuesday, January 21: I took my cutter and took my wife and carried her to Sand Lake to Mr. Henry Withees and left her on a visit. I had seven cheese and two skim cheese. I sold it at nine cts per excepting the skim, I sold at six cts. I went to Miles Tavern and put out my horse and had my bitters and stayed.
Wednesday: This morning I paid my bill at Miles. My horsekeeping 25 cts and lodging 12 cts and bitters twice six cts, the whole amount 44 cts. I started out at twelve o’clock for home. I came to Henry Withees and took dinner at his son Rufus. Today at nearly three this afternoon I took my wife and came home from said Withees. We called to Lathums and paid 4 cts for brandy. We got home at half past seven. This evening we had a severe snow storm and wind and the snow drifted. My wife got chilled and almost frozen, she lost her reason for more than two hours. [/private]
