Repairing the Rental House For the Minister

March 30, 2017 By eastwickpress

Sunday, March 29, 1840: Tonight James Bush the singing master came and fetched Orra Holcomb to my house and left him and he returned to Calvin P. Sackett’s.

[private]Monday: I took my covered wagon and carried my family to funeral of Caroline Torry’s at the house of Old Widow Booge’s. Edward Hiscox preached. Today Mr Gilbert Goodrich came and bargained with me for my Rodgers house and garden for one year from the first day of April for one Mr. Grant to live in said house. He is called a Baptist minister and said Goodrich agreed to pay me twenty five dollars one year end at the time expired that he hired the house and garden for. Tonight my two daughters went to singing school with Daniel Sackett. Quite a snowstorm today.

Saturday, April 4: I drew two loads of wood from the hill and this afternoon I walked up to Simon Cranston and was on a committee to nominate town officers.

Monday: This forenoon I met Gilbert Goodrich on my Rodgers farm and he bargained with me to repair my house on said farm. He agreed to put in two long sills, one in the front and one in the back of said house and take away the old chimney on the back side of the house and furthermore he agrees to find boards, nails and whatever is needed to repair said house excepting I do agree to find the before-mentioned standing in the tree in my swamp and I do agree to find the lime delivered at said house and he agrees to do all that is required to repair said house for durability and convenience and I do agree to credit him ten dollars on the rent. This bargain in the presence of Alonzo Rodgers and Hull Goodrich.

Tuesday: This morning I laid up some fence and today I walked over to Hiram W. Brown’s to town meeting. We have elected Hosea W. Brown for Supervisor and every other town officer on the Democratic ticket. I paid eight cents for maple sugar at town meeting and I returned home and drew out manure. Tonight we kept two essence peddlers and a horse.

Thursday: This forenoon I took my two lumber wagons and carried one and a half bushels of our slaked lime over to my Rodgers house for said Gilbert Goodrich to repair said house as is before agreed. This afternoon we drew stone into my milk yard to fill up a ditch that the water had gulled out.

Tuesday, April 14: I plowed sward and this day I sent school returns by Mr. John Russel to draw the state money but we the trustees had not signed the report of scholars and the bill was returned without drawing any money and the bill to me.

Wednesday: We plowed sward and this evening I walked up to Mr. Young’s, one of the school commissioners and left it with his wife, for he was gone to Troy.

Saturday: On this week the Baptist minister by the name of Grant moved into my house that Gilbert Goodrich hired of me. They went in on Thursday. [/private]
