Saturday, February 29, 1840: This morning Peter Surdam went from here to Hancock to his wife.[private] On this evening Peter Surdam and wife came from Hancock and stayed with us and this evening we reckoned with said Peter and wife and found seven weeks board due for their child from the 12th January with Mrs Surdam and she paid up all but three dol and that in addition to the seven weeks board at 75 cts per week amounts to eight dol and 25 cts for their child and said Peter paid that amount himself for the first time since we have boarded his child.
Sunday: Today when Peter Surdam and wife left here for Hancock I handed said Peter back a five dol bill that he paid me last night. the money was not current and now he stands indebted five dol.
Tuesday: Today Mr. Marrels chopped for me on the hill half a day and then rainy. I chopped a spell with him in the morning, chopping down large black oak.
Wednesday: I chopped and drew wood from the hill and Mr. Marrels chopped for me towards his rent, and today said Marrels bargained with me for the house and garden up to the road for one year from the first of April and agrees to pay me twelve dol if he has a cow, I do agree to pasture her on my Rodgers farm at 12 cts per week, daytimes, but not in my night pasture. I do agree to drive and fetch his cow with mine. Tonight Maryann Humphrey and Hanna Sackett stayed with us and the schoolmaster Wheeler and Daniel Sackett stayed with us for it was rainy.
Thursday: Today I took my two horse wagon and Westalo Rodgers rode with me to E. Goodrich saw mill and said Westalo Rodgers agreed to pay said Goodrich for the sawing of my maple and ash timber and he divides with me and took one-third of said timber and I fetched home for him his timber with mine and I got my french bedstead to Alonzo Rodgers that he had made for me and he charged two dol for making and I paid him the timber I had borrowed to make my bedstead and today I left my side hill plow to brother Simeon Wylie’s to be repaired.
Friday: I walked over onto my Rodgers farm and salted my cows. On the way I called to Simeon Wylie’s and paid him for mending my plow. This afternoon I walked to Lebanon and carried N. Nichols thirteen pounds and a half of butter and he credited sixteen cts per. On my way to Lebanon I met Peter Surdam and he paid me two dol and fifty cts, which is half the five dol I returned to him of bad money.
Tuesday: Today Mr. Bush the singing master called and stayed with us and he rode to singing school with us to Samuel Holcomb’s with my two horse lumber wagon. I paid Mr. Bush two dol what I signed to support the singing school. [/private]
