Monday, December 9, 1839: Today I went to Pittsfield with sixteen bushels apples and some late-made cheese. [private]This morning I sold the remainder of my load. I got fifty cts per bushel for the apples and eight cts apiece for the seven heads of cabbage and I sold 5 dollars and 51 cts worth late-made cheese at 7 cts per.
Tuesday: Today Wm Chapman came and carried my wife to Hiram Brown’s as a witness to prove property that he says Mr. Martin Connor had stolen, but the court was adjourned. On this evening my sons drove the wagon to singing school to Samuel Holcomb’s.
Wednesday: This evening when Mr. Adams was leading his horse out of my cider house his norse kicked into the wheel of Curtis Brown’s carriage and bent the axletree and hurt said Adams some.
Friday: I tended to chores and chopped wood to the door. My wife made thirty dozen of candles. Tonight Rufus Withee stayed with us, he returned me a three dollar bill that I paid him the other day with other money for interest money. The bill he told me is counterfeit and I handed him other money for the bill this evening.
Tuesday: I took my wife and we went to Washington Carpenter’s on a visit. We got there at sunset and made an evening visit, said Carpenter was not to home. I handed his wife the three dollar bill that said Withee returned to me, it was said to be counterfeit.
Wednesday, December 25: I went with my two-horse sleigh to the funeral of Eunice Smith at Lebanon Springs Baptist Church and carried my wife and two oldest daughters and the singing master Mr. Bush, he came here last evening and went to singing school with my cutter and carried Charlotte and Angeline.
