Wednesday September 18, 1839: This afternoon we passed the little falls and some rainy. I paid nine cts for bitters and raisons.
[private]Thursday: We passed through Utica before daylight and came onto Whitesborough and made a short stop and we came on to Rome at the mansion house. We left the canal at twelve o’clock. I paid our passage to Capt Mathews, the three dollars as is before agreed, and I paid 12 cts for my wife and daughter on a wagon and I left the trunks at the Mansion house and I paid three cts for bitters. I then walked to Rome to brother Reuben Morton’s and he hired an Indian to fetch my trunks to Rome and I paid eight cts for fetching said trunks.
Friday: Today brother Morton took his two horse wagon and carried his wife and myself and wife to New London and he returned home and we took passage on the canal to Canastota and paid our passage for three of us 21 miles travel 63 cts. There we stayed to cousin Clark’s that his wife was Lucinda Morton.
Saturday: Today brother Morton came from Rome and fetched his daughter Rebecca and my daughter Angeline and visited with us to cousin Clark’s and this afternoon my wife returned to Rome in the wagon with brother Morton and my daughter Angeline. We all returned to Rome on the railroad and our fare was 50 cts each. Tonight I and my wife went to Mr. Page’s and stayed. His wife was Polla Wylie when a girl. On this evening Mr. Page and wife went with my wife and I to Mr. Caleb Goodrich’s and returned home with said Page and stayed.
Sunday: We went from cousin Page’s and called to Mr. Holcomb’s to see the wife of Elisha Morton. She is sick, and then we returned to brother Reuben Morton’s. This afternoon Jay Morton took his wagon and carried me to Lyman Springs. I found him at or near the tavern and we went into said tavern and I paid 34 cts for brandy that we three had to drink.
