Shoddy Work

October 27, 2016 By eastwickpress

Thursday, May 2, 1839: On this day the old widow Moffit died, she was the widow of Hosey Moffit, general.

[private]Friday: We plowed and harrowed on my Rodgers farm. Today Mr. Newton Gold had a child fall into a tub of soap and died instantly.

Saturday, May 18: This forenoon we planted potatoes and I repaired fence and this afternoon I took my single wagon and rode to Lebanon to Squ Paul Roberts after Fanna Roberts to come to work for us but she was not quite ready and I fetched her trunk and agreed to go after her in a few days. I took tea at Mr. Roberts on the way to Lebanon. I called to Elem Tilden’s Store and got trusted for a box Chlorine cosmetic and pills which was one dollar. I got them for the salt rheum on my hands that I had been afflicted with from my infancy up and now it rages so bad that it almost disenables me from some kinds of work and is very painful.

Tuesday, May 21: Today I went to Albany with a two horse team, Charlotte and John F went with me. I carried a load of potatoes of twenty one bushels and sold them at 50 cts per bushel. Tonight we put up in South Market St at the Mechanics and Farmers Hotel. They took my team to another stable for theirs was washed away with the freshet last winter.

Wednesday: We came out of Albany at 4 o’clock this afternoon, my ferryage for twice crossing was 25 cts. We went the Van Rensselaer road and we bated at Miller’s. We did not get home until two o’clock this morning.

Friday, May 24: Today I worked on the highway. I went on with my plow and team and my son Geo P to drive plow which makes four days works. Saturday: I took my pleasure wagon to Mr. Joshua Maxon’s to repair the iron work over after Mr. Rowland Danford for he had done the work in such a manner that it would be an injury to run the wagon. Mr Rowland Danford called to settle with me. I paid him all his demand, which was three dol and forty five cts, but he would not pay me my damage for not doing the work right on my pleasure wagon and I told him I must compel him to by law and this evening I walked up to Squ Leland Sheldon and got a summons for said Danford. When I had returned home it had got to be past midnight.

Sunday: We went on to our Rodgers Farm and found a cow that had hid in the bushes and had got a calf. I called to Joseph Browns and left the summons with Philander Leroy to be put in force against said Danford.[/private]
