The Draken, a Norwegian built Viking ship, passed through the Capital Region last week.[private] Leaving Norway in late April, the 114 foot long vessel sailed across the Atlantic Ocean and entered North America through the St. Lawrence River / Seaway. After traveling to ports throughout the Great Lakes, the ship came across New York State by way of the Erie Canal. While traveling through the canal, the ship had to remove its bow figurehead and sail mast so it could fit under the bridges along the route. They were refitted in Waterford once the ship reached the Hudson River. This week it is berthed in Kingston before making stops in New York City and Connecticut. From there it will return to Norway.
