The Girls Are Off To Boarding School

August 11, 2016 By eastwickpress

Sunday, October 7, 1838: On this evening I walked up to Mrs Ryan’s to see if she would board my two oldest daughters when she got moved to Lebanon near Morey’s School, but she could not tell me whether she could board for she has engaged all the boarders that she can conveniently[private] and on this evening I paid Mr. Corey the school bill that I sent Sarah up to the school near Mr. Rollows that Frances Delano kept, which was 32 cts.

Thursday: Today I and my two sons went with my two horse and one horse wagons and fetched nearly 50 bushels of potatoes from my Rodgers Farm that Moss Hadsell raised on shares, and when we got home my son George P was taking the horses off the wagon and they backed the wagon over the blocking and the wagon ran down the bank and pulled the horses down and flung one of them and I had to cut the harness to get them clear from the wagon. Some rainy today.

Saturday: We gathered apples and towards night the two sons of the widow Surdam came and picked up apples, which pays up last winter’s school bill, and I paid them six cts more than what he owed me.

Saturday: I went and borrowed a pail of fine salt to Mr. John Russel’s, which makes 24 pounds and one ounce of fine salt that we borrowed in going twice after. This afternoon I went chestnutting and today I paid Fila Nigh up for the work she did for us this season. I paid her 18 dol and 50 cts cash in addition to the 50 cts we had paid her before, which makes out the whole amount for the 19 weeks.

Monday: This morning I took my single wagon and carried my two oldest daughters to Lebanon Springs to the Navarino(?) to Amos Morey’s Select School and stayed and board with said Morey. He agrees to board my two daughters for 94 cts apiece per week only they come home on Saturday noon and stay til Monday. On this evening I went to school meeting. I was chairman and Simeon Wylie clerk, trustees Joshua B. Maxon, James M. Glass and Frederick Russell, but it was the minds of the district not to have a school. they have but a few in the district.[/private]
