August 18, 2016 By eastwickpress

Saturday, October 28, 1838: I called up to Josiah Egleston to see if I could hire a girl but could not.[private]

Sunday: This afternoon I rode up town to Geo Glasses inquiring after a hired girl for my wife is sick. Ezra Buton rode home with me and stayed tonight. Quite a snow storm.

Monday: I rode to the shakers mill and got my grists and I called to a number of places to try to hire a girl.

Sunday, Nov. 4: This evening I rode over to get Fila Nigh to come and work for us but she refused and I walked up to Zach Chapman’s to see if I could hire the daughter of Wm Chapmans but could not for her health is poor.

Monday: Today Alonzo Rodgers helped me shingle on my cheese house and this morning my son Geo P took the wagon and carried his two sisters to Amos Morey’s school.

Wednesday: I went to election to Hiram Brown’s. I paid three cts for wine for my son Geo P, and I paid six cts for crackers to fetch to my wife. I walked over and home.

Thursday: Quite rainy. I tended to pressing out cider and I rubbed my cheese. I have the tooth ache.

Monday, Nov. 12: This afternoon I took the single wagon and carried my two sons to Hancock Village to the circus. I paid fifty cts for myself and fifty cts for my two sons and I called to Mr. Eldridge’s tavern and paid twenty five cts for one pint oysters to fetch home to my wife for she continues quite unwell.

Saturday: This afternoon I rode out to Brother Beers and he paid me sixteen dollars and thirty cts which is in full for Angeline keeping school this summer past. This evening I walked down from brother Beers to Ezekiel Knapps to see if Emeline Oins would work for us but she would not.

Sunday: Today I went with brother Beers to Elonzo Andrews and engaged Ann Eliza Sanford and fetched her home with me to work for us.

Tuesday: Today Mr. Benj Green from Berlin came and bargained for my cheese at eight dollars per cwt and I do agree to carry it to Troy.

Thursday: I tended to cheese and banked up the house. Tonight I took the single wagon and carried Ann Eliza Sanford home. I carried her to Eber Moffitt’s and left her and paid her 56 cts for her four days works. [/private]
