Coach Josh Weaver is looking for a way to push the boy’s basketball program at Berlin Central School to the next level, and feels their participation in the summer basketball program at [private]Hudson Valley Community College is a step in that direction. The league is made up of schools from around the Capital Region, and while the games are played under similar rules as those used during the scholastic season, it’s a chance for the coaches to spend more time with players and keep then engrossed in the sport all summer long.
Berlin started the season with a win against the Tamarac Bengals (Brunswick), and moved their record to 2-0 with a victory over former Central Hudson Valley League foe Waterford. Last Thursday afternoon, the Mountaineers suffered their first loss against Maple Hill (Schodack). Berlin built an eight-point lead late in the first half, but saw Maple Hill use a pressure game creating a number of turnovers they capitalized on in the second half to post the 42-33 win. A high point of the team last winter was their 3-point shooting, which was strong once again in the first half of the game, but went cold in the second. Coach Weaver is impressed with the spirit of his team and hopes the bond they create this summer will carry through to the regular season.[/private]
