Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County is pleased to announce the 2016 4-H Teen Council Scholarship Recipients. The 4-H Teen Council Scholarship is a very special award. Any graduating senior enrolled in the Rensselaer County 4-H program is able to apply for the scholarship, awarded annually. [private]There is an extensive application which includes the candidates’ 4-H experiences and accomplishments on local, county, state, and national levels and how these experiences relate to their personal development. Additionally, a narrative is required in which applicants explain their educational goals and how 4-H has prepared them to achieve these goals. We would like to congratulate the following recipients.
Kathleen Renna, daughter of Tim and Cathy Renna of Brunswick has been an active member of Rensselaer County 4-H for the past 9 years. We are excited to announce Kathleen is the recipient of the 2016 $1,000 4-H Teen Council Scholarship. She has excelled in the areas of sewing and public speaking and served as many different officer positions for the Thrills and Skills 4-H Club, including president and secretary. Kathleen participated in the district fashion revue and went onto the state review twice. She has also performed many public presentations and received a Gold at the 2015 New York State Public Presentations in the demonstration category. She received county medals in the areas of Fashion Revue and Public Speaking. Kathleen has also been a member of both Teen Exchange, when they went to California, and Teen Ambassadors, where she served as secretary and president. She has been a teen evaluator on the county and state level while also performing many community service activities through these clubs. Kathleen is a very motivated individual and her leadership in 4-H will be missed. Thank you Kathleen for your dedication, we wish you luck as you head off to the University of Connecticut in the fall.
Margaret (Maddie) Hoyt, daughter of Martin and Pamela Hoyt of Averill Park, has been a Rensselaer County 4-H member for 11 years, and we are proud to announce is the recipient of a $500 4-H Teen Council Scholarship. Maddie has been involved in a wide scope of 4-H project areas; from horses to public speaking, to communications, and community service. She could be seen behind the scenes at many 4-H events, helping Teen Ambassadors put together a clothing drive, being a teen evaluator, a fair assistant at county or state fair, and most recently a focus assistant at Career Explorations, a three-day state program, hosting hundreds of teens from New York. Maddie is recognized for her excellence in public speaking, she went on to the state competition in Horse Communications for three years, and received a Silver Award in General Public Presentations in 2013. In 2015, Maddie was the Lohnes Award Recipient, an award given to a Rensselaer County 4-H member who shows true compassion, leadership and commitment to the 4-H Horse Program. Maddie is a very charismatic individual and will truly be missed. Thank you for your dedication to 4-H and we wish you luck as you head off Belmont University this fall.
Emma Woolley, daughter of Laura Sicko Woolley and Mark Woolley of Cherry Plain, has been named Berlin High School’s Class of 2016 Valedictorian. Emma has been a member of 4-H for 6 years and we are excited to announce she is a recipient of a $500 Teen Council Scholarship for 2016! She has truly taken advantage of the many dynamics affiliated within the 4-H Horse project area, leadership opportunities, and community service projects. She has gone on to represent Rensselaer County at the state level for Horse Communications in 2015, received Senior High Point Reserve Champion in 2014 and Senior High Point Co-Champion in 2015 as well as the prestigious Golden Horseshoe Award in 2013 and 2015. Emma is also a member of the Teen Ambassadors, helping spread the word about 4-H to the public. Through the Ambassadors, Emma helped organize a Bowl-a-Thon to raise money for the 4-H program, participated in many community service projects, such as answering phones at the WAMC Telethon and helped as a fair assistant and evaluator. Emma is a very driven individual and has demonstrated excellence in all of her academics and 4-H. Her strong character is truly going to be missed. We wish the best of luck to Emma at SUNY Potsdam this fall.[/private]
