Girls in the “Advocates of Compassion Club” planned an event to benefit “Children With Hair Loss,” an organization that creates wigs for children in need.[private]
The event, called “Love Is In The Hair,” was Friday, June 3 in the high school auditorium. Twenty-six students and three faculty members, including a retiree from last year, donated their hair. Additionally, five anonymous donations came from community members. In total, 359.5 inches (30 feet) of hair were donated.
Jennifer Berry, Advocates of Compassion Club Advisor, said, “We expected this event to be successful; it met and exceeded our expectations. We had double the number of expected donations, which sets an excellent baseline goal for when we do this next year. After seeing that their friends had donated, we had girls just show up and offer to donate, without giving it a second thought, which shows another example of how caring and compassionate this community is.”
Emma Ganger-Spivak, one of the student representatives who helped organize the event said, “We wanted to create an event which any girl could participate in to have the experience of both giving and helping to change the way they see their appearances while helping others in need feel more confident about theirs. I was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and support we saw the day of the event. I greatly appreciated the bravery of those who were reluctant to part with their hair, but did so anyhow in the name of a good cause.”[/private]
