By all standards both the Mountaineer’s squads were young this year, with Coach Josh Weaver admitting the baseball team was in a rebuilding mode. [private]
The girls’ softball season saw the Lady Mountaineers post two wins, but ended the season on a down note with two shutout losses to Emma Willard. The wins over Berlin giving the Troy private school the Central Hudson Valley League title. Coach Art Schmich was proud of his team, who worked hard to become competitive after a pair of blowout losses to open the season. Amanda Despart developed into a strong pitcher and the defense showed marked improvement as the season wore on.
The baseball team put together its finest effort this past week against the Heatly Hornets, falling just one run short of its first victory in a 16 to 15 loss. Sophomore Henry Ruebel led the Berlin parade of hits with a three run home run and two other singles. Junior Chris Houle went two for three at the plate with a triple, knocking in two runs and scoring twice himself. In his last game, Senior Jake Bruns doubled and singled, plated two runs for Mountaineer’s and scored three times.
The season appears to be over for both teams, as neither expects a bid to the Section II tournament. The Berlin Track teams have two more meets this week, before the spring sports season at Berlin comes to as close.[private]
