It wasn’t until last Friday that Mother Nature relented enough that the Berlin Mountaineers baseball and softball teams could hear the cry of “play ball.” [private]The boys baseball team traveled to Waterford to play the Fordians, coming out on the short side of a 15-0 score. Henry Ruebel was the hitting star for Berlin, going two for two at the plate. Garrett Fiske also collected a hit in two official at bats. Earlier this week, Berlin traveled to Rensselaer, only to fall to the Rams by a 31-0 score. Garrett Fiske collected the only hit for the Mountaineers.
After a tough opening week on the diamond, the Lady Mountaineers showed improvement in their two games. Although they lost to the New Lebanon Tigers 12 to 5, Tiffany Foley pitched well, striking out five New Lebanon batters while walking just two. Alyssa Bierwirth contributed to Berlin’s effort, driving in two runs with a double. Monday saw the Lady Mountaineers lose a close contest to the Rensselaer Rams, 10 to 7. Amanda Despart pitched the entire game, walking only two. Berlin had the bases loaded in the 7th and final inning, but could not come up with the key hit to drive the runs in. Coach Art Schmich said their “defense is much improved, but the girls are still making errors at important points in the game.”
Berlin’s track and field teams had their meet in Granville postponed.[/private]
