How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying is a musical based on the book of the same name. The story is about a young window washer, J. Pierrepont Finch, who believes he can be successful in the business world after reading a copy of a book describing how to do so. The book promises the reader they can climb the corporate ladder by following some simple steps. The company housed in the building where he washes windows, Worldwide Wicket Company, is parallel to the business described in the book he is reading.
Finch meets secretary Rosemary Pilkington, who believes the corporate world will eat him alive. Finch starts to fall for Rosemary. He quickly climbs the corporate ladder, but not by doing any real work. Finch has a few obstacles along the way. Finch possibly makes a fatal error by not reading far enough ahead in the book.
Drama Club co-director Brett Hanselman (HFCS ‘11) said, “Directing on the stage I once performed on has been an overall great experience for me. The musical is coming along so great, and the kids are immensely talented for their age! I couldn’t be happier to see the level they take this show to. The show opens exactly five years after my senior show was performed on this stage, so I’m hoping for some great omens!”
How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying has appeared on Broadway (1961-1965, 1995-1996, and 2011-2012) and the most recent revival featured Daniel Radcliffe.
It was also made into a film, released by United Artists in 1967.
Drama Club co-director Gwen Youngmann said,” “How To Succeed is my first musical as a director, and the experience has been just as fun and crazy as I could have hoped. The show is bright and bold, full of hilarious characters and great musical numbers. I am so proud of the students, and the and the work they put in, I can’t wait for the Hoosick community to see this show!”[/private]
