With three track meets under their belts, both the Boys and Girls teams can point to a number of accomplishments this season, with several members setting both individual, team and meet records as they go. [private]
At the recent Stillwater Relays, Alex Flowers set both a new team and meet mark with a pole vault of 13 feet, 1 inch. Berlin’s Sam Mikit also posted his personal best with a 10-foot vault. Flowers is undefeated in league competition and is rated the top Class C vaulter in the state. Overall, the boys were 11th and the Lady Mountaineers 10th in the 16 team event.
Maggie Gordon remains undefeated in the WASAREN League in the 200-meter dash and ranks third in the 1500 meter run. Laura and Allison Ryder remain the top competitors in discus and shot put, with Laura hoping this year’s efforts will lead to a return to the NY state qualifiers. Allison is hoping to make her debut at the States as well. Coach Jen Burhan is very pleased with the team’s performance to date, as the Mountaineers travel to Hudson Falls Saturday for one of the largest meets in the area.
The Berlin Baseball Team dropped a pair of games this past week, losing to Loudonville Christian by a score of 16 to 11. Senior Ethan Benedict, Junior Garrett Fiske and Sophomore John Kluck each drove in two runs for the Mountaineers. Sophomore Henry Ruebel went one for two at the plate, scoring twice and stealing home in the fourth. Last Thursday Berlin played host to the New Lebanon Tigers. The visitors put up a 12 spot in the top of the sixth to pull out of reach of Berlin. Garrett Fiske went one for two at the plate, with a walk and three stolen bases. Coach Josh Weaver tells The Eastwick Press this is a rebuilding year for Berlin, and some injuries to key players have not helped their cause.
The Lady Mountaineers softball team continues to improve with each game. The Eagles of Loudonville Christian posted a 6-0 score over Berlin this past week, but Amanda Despart put in another strong effort on the mound, striking out three. Despart and Destiny Lavenia Watson each recorded a hit in the game. Coach Art Schmich was very pleased with the defensive play of his infield in this game, which had been a real concern at the beginning of the year. [/private]
