The Taconic Valley Youth Basketball (TVYB) 5th grade girls team brought home the first trophy for TVYB on Monday night.

The 13 girls on this team had a rocky start to the season, but did a 360 and ended with Second place in the Rensselaer March Madness Tournament.

The girls played 4 games (including the championship game) with scores of 25-10 loss against Clifton Park, 33-24 win against Guilderland, 11-13 win against Rensselaer in OT.

At the championship game the girls were in the lead by 2 points at the half, and at the end of the game behind by 2 points.  The 6th grade Clifton Park team was able to find the hoop to take the win with a 20-16 win.

Second place is no joke for this team.  They played an outstanding game and had a great season!  Coaches from other teams we played for the second time even noticed and complimented our girls on their progress this season.

Some members of TVYB, players, and coaches attended the BOE meeting at the Berlin High School last night to thank them for building use and all the support given by the staff and administration. Without them we could not build this program and make it successful.

TVYB teams also supported other school events attending the Berlin Alumni game, and the Berlin Varsity Boys home sectional game, as well as other events. In return the 5/6 girls against boys game had just as much school community support including some cheer leaders and Jackson Burhans making an appearance as the Berlin Mountaineer mascot passing out t-shirts and magnets (donated by the PTO) into the roaring crowd!  It was a great night for the players and fans!

The boys 5/6 team also had a great season with a record of 9-12-0, with 2 of their players making the CD premier team after trying out!

We have had the best parental, community (including the PVMCC where you can see all the team photo’s from the start of the program on display), and school support and look forward to this program growing as well as the players’ skill level and love for the game.

Currently Kyle and Trisha Jansen oversee the program, but it was introduced to the community by Joey and Kathy Burdick.  We are now part of the CYO and compete with some tough schools.

Kyle Jansen had asked the Berlin BOE if we could display our first trophy at the school for now. The Board approved his request and soon you too will able to see the program’s first event trophy at the High School.[/private]
