Sunday, April 30, 1837: This morning Deacon Pierce went up and engaged Elder Jones to preach the Funeral Sermon tomorrow at twelve o’clock, and engaged Alonzo Rodgers to make the coffin and Mr. John Russel came and I had him go and engaged Mr. Hires and Mr. Pattison to dig the grave and Platt Wylie rode to Lebanon to Nathaniel Nichols store and had some grave clothes charged, I do not know the price. [private]Towards night I sent Hiram Newton to N. Nichols after more cambric, for what I sent for by Platt was not suitable, the amount of the charge I did not learn. This forenoon I walked up to the burying ground to tell where to dig the grave. Tonight Nathaniel Wylie and Eliza Wylie and Harriet Dun watched with the corpse.
Monday, May 1: Today the funeral was attended to my house. Elder Jones preached. The meeting began at twelve o’clock. My wife did not go to the grave. Sister Eleanor rode to the grave with me in my single wagon. Mr. John Russel’s team carried my two oldest daughters to the grave and carried brother Sylvester and his daughter. Brother Beers was not able to come to the funeral, but his two sons came and after funeral and after supper they carried sister Eleanor home.
Tuesday: I began to work my old sorrel mare with my young horse. Today tended to my chores and cut straw and drew a load of manure from my cider house and a load of stone to the river. I finished plowing my garden that I left when my horses ran away last Thursday.
Thursday: Today we drove over the cows to pasture and my white cow got mired and I had to get Simeon Wylie Jnr and his oxen and boat to draw her up to the barn and Alonzo Rodgers and his brother Westalo to help.
Friday: I sent my boys and got Benj Carpenter and Matthew Jones and brother Sylvester, we could not raise my cow on to her feet and I left the cow and fed her a-lying down, and we returned home. Quite showery and a thunderstorm and sharp lightening.
Saturday: Today quite rainy. Today I got Platt Wylie with his oxen and brother Simeon Wylie’s oxen and stone boat and we drew my cow home from my Rodgers farm, and Mr. John Russel came home with me and helped get my cow into my barn.[/private]
