Berlin Boys Fall To Cambridge But Head Into Sectional Play Optimistic
By Doug La Rocque
The Mountaineers closed out the regular season with an 80 to 59 loss to the Cambridge Indians, stepping up in class as a tune up to this week’s Section 2 Class D competition. Roark Slattery again led from the way with 27 points and six rebounds. Slattery also dropped in six from three-point land. Senior Ryan Shumway added 12 points while Ryan Gosse contributed another 11 points. The Mountaineers held their own on the defensive boards, but only four offensive rebounds hampered their scoring efforts.
[private]Berlin is seeded 7th in the Section 2 tournament. They open play against the 10th seeded Northville Falcons at home. Besides the normal desire to go as far as possible in sectional play, the Mountaineers have a couple of other motivational factors at work. Berlin has never won a sectional basketball game before, and Coach Kasson Sauer told the Eastwick Press back before the season began, this team was determined to change that. Earlier this year, Northville’s Falcons came to Berlin for Class D soccer games against both the Boy’s and Girl’s squads, and left with a pair of victories. Should Berlin be victorious this week, they will next play the 2nd seeded Wolves of Oppenheim Ephratah-St. Johnsville, a school made up from a recent merger of districts in the western side of Fulton and Montgomery counties.
Lady Mountaineer Season Comes To An End
Berlin’s Girls’ Basketball season has come to a close with a 50-29 loss to Loudonville Christian. Senior Maggie Gordon again led the team in scoring, as she has done almost all year. The Lady Mountaineers are not competing in the Class D tournament this year. The game against the Eagles was also senior night, with the careers of Maggie Gordon, Tiffany Foley, Cassie Bentley, Jordan Cahill and Lindsey Miller being celebrated before their home fans. Coach Fleda Berschwinger telling the Eastwick Press they have all given a lot to the program and shown great improvement in their time here. “They have created many great memories for themselves and their teammates and they will all be missed next year.
