Win Over Waterford Keeps Berlin Boys In Second Place In The CHVL

January 14, 2016 By eastwickpress

By Doug La Rocque

Senior captain Ryan Shumway led the way for the Mountaineers Boys Basketball team, as they posted a 55 – 40 win over the Fordians of Waterford.  [private]The victory moved Berlin’s league record to 5-1, the only blemish behind a loss to league leader Germantown.  Shumway tossed down 18 points to go along with his 6 steals to lead Berlin’s transition offense.  Sophomore captain Ryan Willis recorded his third double-double of the season, leading all scorers with 23 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

Things didn’t go quite so well at the recent Argyle Holiday Tournament.  The Mountaineers opened the classic with a 74-63 loss to the Cougars of North Warren Central (Chestertown).  Roark Slattery was the top point man in that game with 26 to go along with his 4 steals.  Ryan Shumway added 15 points and Ryan Willis and Dan Bentley grabbed 6 rebounds each. Next up for Berlin was the host team, the Argyle Scotties.  Despite Ryan Shumway’s 6 three pointers and overall 23 points, the Mountaineers fell by the score of 80-63.  Roark Slattery had 21 points in the loss, while Ryan Willis had 13 points and pulled down 8 rebounds.  Up next this week for the 6-4 Boy’s squad are games against league opponents Loudonville Christian, New Lebanon and the Heatly Hornets.

Lady Mountaineers Drop A Pair Of Games

Showing perhaps a little rust after a long Christmas break, the varsity girls’ basketball team lost in its first outing back, 45-20 to New Lebanon.  A 16-0 third quarter run by the Tigers put the game out of reach.  Jordan Cahill and Maggie Gordon each had six points to lead Berlin.  Later in the week, Mountaineers traveled to Loudonville Christian.  Coach Fleda Berschwinger said the team “played a great defensive game, improving on rebounding and a transition offense,” but still came up short 43-38.  Maggie Gordon again led the way with 17 points while Tiffany Foley tossed down another 13.  The Lady Mountaineers tip off this week against Doane Stuart and Germantown.

Gigi French Shines Again In Recent Swim Meet

Despite a sweep of the New Lebanon Berlin swim teams by Massachusetts based Monument Mountain High School, two swimmers continue to shine for NLB.  Gigi French placed first in the 100 meter Breaststroke.  She recently broke the team’s record in the 100 meter Butterfly.  Zachary Shepard continues to shine for the boy’s team, placing first in the 50 meter Freestyle and second in the 100 Free.[/private]
