Halloween For Heros

October 15, 2015 By eastwickpress

A Spooky Night In Grafton

For more than ten years Marty Sawyer of Grafton has been transforming his barns and garage into a regular chamber of horrors to provide a little Halloween fun for both adults and children.  The numbers of people getting their wits scared out has grown each year, and many of Marty’s friends and neighbors have urged him to turn it into an annual charitable event.  [private]

So this year, he did.  A former member of the military himself, Sawyer choose the Grafton VFW Post and STRIDE Wounded Warriors project to share in the day’s proceeds.  The day started with a fund raiser at the VFW featuring a raffle, refreshments and music.  Saturday night was reserved for the real fun, a trip through rooms filled with chainsaw killers, headless bodies and walking dead.  Sawyer charged a five dollar admission fee for the first time, with all the monies raised also being split between the VFW and STRIDE.

The mission of the Veterans of Foreign Wars is to foster camaraderie among U.S. veterans of overseas conflicts.  To serve veterans, the military and their communities and to advocate on behalf of all veterans.  STRIDE has been serving the military veterans population since 2006.  The organization provides recreational activities to men and women of the armed forces who have been injured in combat.

STRIDE Adaptive Sports has supported regional Wounded Warrior rehabilitative sport and mentorship programs, restoring hope, independence and freedom while improving self-esteem, and confidence. STRIDE holds some of their programs at their camp in Chatham, NY, and one of their biggest events is the Annual Wounded Warrior Snowfest which takes place in Troy, NY and at Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort.[/private]
