The HFCS sports awards banquet was held Monday evening June 8 in the HFCS gymnasium. The awards were handed out after an excellent meal prepared by the school’s cafeteria staff.
The evening began with the nice dinner of salad, baked potato, turkey, stuffing, stuffed shells and choice of several deserts. Everyone enjoyed the meal and conversation.
[private] Immediately following the meal, the coaches of each sport presented their choices for awards. Many award names were selected by the coach, sometimes to fit the individual winner, others were names that have been used for years. Awards began with the fall sports and continued through the seasons.
It was interesting to hear the individual statistics. Chelsea Stevens, for instance, had 245 plays at first base over the last two seasons, with a chance for an error on each of those plays, but recorded only one error. Basketball player Andrew Hoag, the team’s point guard and shortest player of the starters, led the team in rebounds this season and finished his career as the second leading rebounder of all time, behind 6’ 5” leader Kevin McMahon.
Many of the winners are headed to college to play sports while getting their education. Mark Hackett, winner of the Football Defensive Player of the Year, is headed to Hartwick College to play football. Stephen Colvin Award winner Rachel Pine is also headed to Hartwick, where she will play soccer. Noah Chani will play soccer goalie at Goucher College..
After the awards were presented, the evening came to end with a lot of picture taking. Groups assembled and posed, dispersed and then reassembled in another group and posed with others.
