The Stephen Colvin Second Annual Flag Football Tournament was held Saturday on the HFCS fields. It was a great success on a gorgeous June day.
The tournament was held to honor Steve Colvin, who was killed in a tragic 2014 skiing accident. Loved by everyone who crossed his path, Steve’s friends and classmates come together each year since to celebrate his life and raise money for a scholarship in his name.

The double elimination format was used with play beginning at 10 am and continuing through the day. Each team was required to have at least two females. Five “ football fields” were used to narrow down the teams until just two remained. Food was available at the Frying Dutchman food wagon manned by Eamonn DeGraaf and his crew, with profits donated back to the tournament. Scott Goldstein won the $250 raffle, then he immediately gave the money back and added another $250 for good measure.
The money from the tournament, $6,000 was raised this year, is used to fund a scholarship in Stephen’s name. Each year the Colvin family chooses a boy and a girl who best exemplify the qualities that they believe Stephen would look for in a friend and is an athlete who hopes to compete in a sport at the college level. Each chosen recipient receives a $1,000 scholarship from the fund. This year’s winners were Mark Hackett and Rachel Pine.
By five o’clock the championship game was over and the winners celebrated. The “Onslaught Nation” team, consisting of HFCS graduate Alice Hayden along with players out of Albany, were the victors. [/private]
