Presented by the New York State Art Teachers Association (NYSATA), the competition involves a series of art “problems” for students to solve in a challenging and creative way. The long-term problem includes an art project that students work on after school to submit on competition day. The categories include: Architecture, Photography, Fashion Design, Sculpture, Painting, Drawing, Illustration and Typography Design. Teams submit binder portfolios showcasing their artist research, sketches and brainstorming. On competition day, students also participate in a spontaneous short-term problem that they solve together on the spot.

“I was touched by our students’ excitement when viewing their peers’ artwork,” said co-advisor Christina Wallace.  “This was a great opportunity for students to learn and grow through collaboration with other districts.”

“The amount of teamwork and enthusiasm seen throughout the whole O.V.A. process from start to finish was inspiring,” said co-advisor Samantha Noles. “We’re determined to win next year!”

Thirteen students were selected to participate based on their level of artistic skill, creativity or work ethic. They include: McKenzie Bellard, CJ Bortnick, Matt Brown, Carly Church, Killian Faulkner, Jackson Flowers, Erin Goodermote, Michelle Griswold, Greta Hermann, Shelbey Mace, Christina Reger, Cole Roberts and Jordan Shupe.

Next year, Berlin High School students will also participate in the competition. Visit www.berlincentral.org to view additional photos.
